It's always been that way. Always. But, people don't seem to realize this and end up at the dealership thinking that the dealer really wants their vehicle.

Anyhow, too bad they don't want to deal on your trade. When I did a factory order for my Mojave, I did all the pricing negotiation without ever mentioning a trade. After that was done, I said "I'll stop by with my trade-in". They agreed to the trade-in value, put it on the paperwork, we all signed it, and then they placed the factory order. I asked about any restriction on miles while waiting for the Mojave to arrive and they told me "we don't care, drive it".
You would think with the multiple phone calls, the multiple emails, they might actually need some used vehicles because the lots, even their used lots, are pretty empty. Likely because the shortage of new on the lot vehicles means they aren't getting anything traded in. But yes, you mention it I think back to years ago, the ads on TV "even if you have to drag it in, we want your car". Memory failing LOL

You have far better negotiating skills obviously. Your ideas are sound.

I'm also starting to see all of this "we want your car even if you don't buy ours" stuff as BS to get you in the store. When you actually start talking money, suddenly they aren't that anxious to buy.
Locally, they are pretty laid back and low dollar on the "offers". No wonder they keep saying they want to buy cars, because they never actually end up buying any as they won't come up to what the internet places do.
U.S.30 Here ya go I just looked at their inventory, nice sarge green 2022 rubi I would trade but I have my 2020 almost set up for my needs. Not going to start over even tho I just past 35,000 on it. My 2 cents

You seem to have been around the block a few times and am surprised such things would surprise you.

All those "drag it in running or not" ads and they give you $X amount of thousands of dollars regardless of condition, usually have had asterisk notes that any upside down value got put on your new vehicle purchase or would refuse trade if not buying something off the lot.

I had thought of that, but this truck is driven multiple times every week. And with show and swap meet season coming up, I can't rely on getting one in a month. In fact, some people here have waited 2, even 3 months, one is still waiting from the first of the year.
If it was a shorter lead time, it would be a done deal. If I knew I could get one in 3-4 weeks, like my first one, yeah. But that can't happen with the supply chain issues and production delays, etc.
Reality - there's a wait on almost everything that has to be manufactured.

If there was one on the lot- it would be simple. Same week deal. But there's nothing in the entire country. So I'd have to order.

The supply chain issues, lack of supplies, lack of chips and other materials, lack of transport drivers, and the long waiting is making this look less likely than thought.

I got ANOTHER phone call from the local dealer! Yeah, he wanted to talk at length - but he was back down on my truck as trade. Originally they said 40,500. Then a week ago one of the managers in sales called and said "what if I come up to 44,000" and I was like - let's talk..............but didn't hear. Then got some emails and back and forth, and that stopped and nothing. Got another call a few minutes ago their used car manager sounded like he wanted my truck, but was back down to 41,000. We started talking about new and I told him what I could do for new - the discounts and numbers below invoice and such and he almost gasped - "how can they possibly do that, that's unreal". Well, that's volume, and that's ordering it, getting it in, prepping it, and getting it out the door. No sitting on lot, no paying for a truck that's sitting for days or weeks, it's get it in, get it out, collect the money type sales.
I told him my biggest concern was the difference between the two - if they could come up on the trade and down on the new, that's the number I care about. If I can get a deep discount on new that's fine but doesn't help if I can't get money for mine. If I can get a great number on my trade that's fine but doesn't help if the new is MSRP.
I think he knows I'm not desperate and that I'm not moving off my goal number which is the difference.

If I can come out with a difference close to what we did with Spencer on my wife's Grand Cherokee, I'd probably do it. That's my number - the DIFFERENCE.

And another phone call! LOL
They are getting closer.......... they came up just a little bit on mine and came down a bit on new.... but they want to keep some of the accessories.
I said - if you guys want to pay for the bumper and winch, it will stay, bug deflector I'm not going to get all excited over a $100 accessory, but I keep the springs and spacers - probably.
I'll keep the tailgate ladder (a gift from my wife) and small stuff like that.
Then he said "you mean you'd take off the tonneau cover?!?"
I was like - huh?
No, that's factory, it came that way. if it's on the build sheet, it stays. I may even leave the tonneau cover latches, easily duplicated as I have another pair and more rivnuts and screws.
And I only mentioned the bumper and winch as it was never discussed and they never asked about it. For $1200, it can stay and I'll start over (maybe less due to the work!!)
But it is interesting they called AGAIN and are at least trying.

He told me the numbers I was getting from others were employee pricing and they just can't do that. OK, they are a small volume dealer, but when you have a chance to order, prep, sell, get the money or otherwise not make a sale at all............. I'm confused on the logic.
Either sell a new truck in the exact configuration and color I want or don't. Doesn't matter. I'm not forced to buy or trade. You'll make a sale, make 2 or 3 grand, or you won't because I won't buy off the lot and likely won't buy at all if there's no deal.

Sell one, even if your profit is half what you get for one on the lot, or don't sell one at all.
But I guess I'm really missing something about how car dealers do business.

I told him -
if I can meet my goal on the difference, I trade.
If I can't meet my goal on the difference, I keep this one.

SP, I’ve seen some of your posts and can tell that you’re a logical guy. It really comes down to how froggy you feel, your appetite for risk and how much you like twisting your wrench.

Myself, I‘ve got some mod parts waiting in my garage for an inbound unit that I’ll likely take if the sky doesn’t fall in x-y weeks from now. I’m not loosing sleep from worry, just stating that there are variables that I think I can plan for and some that maybe I can only guess about or cross my fingers on. Saying that, I believe fortunate favors the bold, not to mention the lucky and/or smart.

As for hunches, I can’t help but think prices will sharply increase and I do think that there is cause for concern of more shortages. So, a well negotiated and price locked order may be your best friend.
I've done the same thing, but only buying aftermarket parts that were on sale (i.e. tires, Mopar 2" lift). My Gladiator is built and sitting in the Jeep yard waiting for a train. I'm trading a '18 TRD Pro, so I'll sell it myself if the dealer plays games.

Update: A friend offered me the price on the original window sticker in 2018! So I’ll pay about 1800 in tax rather than about 600 and not have to deal with dealer BS. My Gladiator is en route.

It will be interesting - I told him that since they were at least in the ballpark parking lot, there was a chance a bit more discussion was worth our time. So I said - email me the numbers, I'm a very visual guy and need to see numbers in black on a white background. I'll play around with them a bit.
I also said that if it matters - they'd be getting my trade with brand new tires as I wanted to keep my tires. They aren't bigger, they aren't 33 or 35s, they are stock diameter, but nice A/Tx tires, RWL and I had 5 five so I had a matching spare with matching wheel and I wanted to stay that way.
He actually almost seemed disappointed making me think he had seen my truck already...... he mentioned the bug deflector so obviously he's seen it. IT has been there more than once for various reasons like wave services.

My wife said this AM - oh, great, I suppose this means we'll have car payments again.......
Hmmm, we'll see. I'd rather not, so we'll see.

So what are you looking to get? Another Overland? Different color? Just curious. Sorry if I missed it somewhere in the 11 pages of replies

They sent me a proposal. They would be charging $220 to move my current tires to the new truck and the new tires to my trade. Hmmmm, seems pricey.
How about lift both trucks, and just move things over, straight across?
Maybe not........my concern with a simple swap- moving the whole wheel and tire assembly would be the TPMS sensor differences. Since they are different, I'll be without a sensor in one of my 5 unless I buy a 5th sensor - unless they'd cross-over on the Overland, then just lift both truc ks and move entire tires on wheels across.
220 seems pricey.
But they have come down $4,100 on the new one. I'm shocked! from 62 to 58.

Adding:
* auto/full time transfer case for sure
* Possibly Gorilla Glass (weight savings, no other real reason other than it's shown to be safer in major accident)
* Aux switches
* Starting over at 0 miles
* Starting over with full warranty - mine hits 3 years this November.

Likely stick with blue - if for some reason that was discontinued, we love the snazzberry, too

Stick with Overland - decent MPG, tows my trailer fine, I don't jump sand dunes at 50 mpg and don't crawl over rocks so big I need the height, lockers or electric sway bar disconnects of Rubicon.

You know, by the time I rebuild my truck around the really great right rear seal, my truck will be better than new. I think I’ll keep it!
