Thanks for all the great replies so far! I have been thinking of this for some time and am debating between a roll or a box with padding to keep noise down.

are there any particular sized sockets or wrenches you have needed that may not be so ‘typical’?

Haha man I font even want to think about how many 10’s I have left under the hood of customers cars when I was a tech.
I’m on the extreme end. I carry a full set of sae and metric sockets, box wrenches, and Allen wrenches. Deep well and shallow for both. I then have hammers, crescent wrenches, torque wrench, impact, a drill, angle grinder, sawzall, extra hardware, a press to rebuild Johnny joints, new bushings for johnies, grease for johnnies and RCV shafts, grease gun, electrical tools, recovery tools, fuses, a few new lug nuts, tire repair kit, co2 tank, and lots of 12v and 18v batteries. But I’m crazy. Oh well. I want to be able to disassemble a suspension on the trail. I want to call no one unless it’s lost at least two wheels. And I always have lots of zip ties.

as for how I store that stuff. One waterproof box for hand tools, and one for power. Then a Bartact bag for recovery stuff.

I'll second Plywood's vote for the official tool rolls. I bought myself a three pack of those for Christmas and have labelled each pocket with what I have in there (ie. one pocket is SAE sockets, one is Metric Sockets, one is socket wrenches and extensions, etc..).... I also have watertight plastic bin in the bed for recovery gear, hitch ball and other larger items.
I saw step22 has a pretty cool roll where you can remove the pouches individually - that seems pretty neat. but man I would need 2 or 3 of those and 150 a pop is kinda pricy.

here is a start, pick and choose
Nice - I need to do this, make a load plan for tools, and everything else too.

If you spring for a 2023 20th Anniversary Edition Rubicon {sorry JL only} (392- $69,585 and 4xe version-$90,895) they will include an 82-piece tool kit

I've switched to the tools rolls that have large zipper pockets and the one bag for big stuff and 'supplies'. Not a complete loadout, but a start. I like the soft bags as they get moved to different vehicles (C4500 Kodiak, RZR RS1), so easier to tuck in and quieter.

That little Jeep kit is pretty sweet! too bad you gotta spend 90k to get it though.

Basic hand tools and impacts. I charge the batteries in the cabin with the built in center console outlet. Only missing thing is a jack, haven't decided on what type.

I have two of these. Side by side they are the width of the bed, and just short enough to fit under a tonneau cover. They were only $50 each when I bought them (summer of '21).

I recently bought a set of these to try out. Maybe this weekend...

officialtoolroll.com has a bundle package where you can get three of their toll rolls for about $95 ... still expensive for some canvas and a few zippers?

I was looking at this one the other day. https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-TOUGHSYSTEM2-0-21-8-in-Tool-Box-DWST08320/318493852 It seems pretty nice and is sorta water protected. But I would probably need 3 of them to carry what I want to be able to carry. I like the idea of the drawers though.

Oh I didn't see that - I'll go look again!

I went the tool roll route a couple years back. Super easy and compact and like mentioned earlier quiet.

As @Mister Lamb said, I have a swing away toolbox. I carry very little tools, a roll of combination wrenches and a full set of reversible ratcheting wrenches, they are smith easier to keep track of than sockets.
The truck comes with a lug wrench and there are always rocks or something around for a hammer.
I NEVER leave home without my pocket knife. Carried one since I was 8, had this one for 25 years.

I have the stock lockable storage compartments under the rear seat. I store tools and recovery gear there, along with a couple of huge crescent wrenches. The tools are for emergencies or camping needs. I also have big tools attached to my bed molle panels. For the stock storage compartments under the rear seat, I have decided to use two thick grocery plastic bags, one inside the other, that cost 10 cents each when you go to the market. This has allowed me to put many more small tools in the compartment vs. using a real container or roll. It has worked great for me because it molds over my hitch and ball, small crow bar, gloves, etc... and I can get many more tools in there packed tight. It is tight in there, so, there is no rattling. I know it is not sophisticated, and most people would laugh at such an implementation, but, I get a ton more tools in there than i normally would be able to, and I cannot think of a way to use a better container to get all that stuff in there.
