So, my 20 max taw is pretty much stock. The only thing I have done are rubicon suspension (front springs, shocks all corners), 315/70/17 KO2, and the JSCAN calibration for the tire size.

Yesterday I decided to tow my 20' Fish / Ski boat yesterday for the first time. The truck seemed to do ok from what I could tell.

I did notice that when going up a hill or something in like 2nd gear, the gear would hold to like almost 5k rpm or so before it would ever upshift.

Is this normal?

Those who tow with bigger tires, what are you experiences with towing with the JT / Max tow?

What should I experience?

You were 1500 rpm below redline, I don't see the problem.
I was only asking if it was normal. Just not used to the JT or any auto vehicle revving that high during normal (non manual mode) driving. Towing or not.

I just wanted to know what towing experiences are like with the JT.

My Tacoma preferred to tow my 19’ Basscat bass boat in the manual mode of the automatic transmission. Something to consider, so you have more control of what gear and the RPMs. I have not towed with my Max Tow yet.

Running that much heavier of a tire than stock as well as going from max tow tires as well as 4 inches taller is going to lead to more revs to keep it moving.

My rubicon gets that high of an rpm regularly when I tow my travel trailer. It’s totally normal. It’s what we get with a v6.

Towed 300 miles with mine this weekend throughout the TX hill country. Averaged about 10mpg with about 6600 pounds. Only time the midsize ugly head showed up as a negative for the long steep uphill grades. But otherwise maintaining 70 miles an hour is pretty much cheese.

I saw a big difference in power going from the stock 245/75/17s to 285/75/17s. I also have a max tow, I have towed my boat with both tires, boat is around 3500lbs. It does okay, mine stayed in 5th and 6th on pretty flat ground at 65mph.

Yes, seems normal. Gladiators tow fine, but not great. I have a 6x10 enclosed trailer that weighs about 2500lbs loaded and my truck doesnt like to leave 6th unless im going downhill. If i start up any grade it goes to 5th or lower.

(Full disclaimer I come from a Ram with a 5.7 so I am used to more power. The Gladiator is simply adequate)

These pictures make me feel good. I knew there is a reason I kept my car trailer that I used to haul the old TJ on!
Not a Max Tow, but the next best tow rating with my JTR. It handles our old fat pig V8 powered boat with ease.

Did you adjust tire size on the computer?

Looks like the Mohave towing capacity is 6000lbs.

IC engines make torque. Horses make horsepower. HP=Torque times RPM then divide by 5252, A short stroke engine can rev higher and therefore equate to a higher HP rating. Buying on HP is is analogous to "mine is bigger than yours". Do the math. Two engines develop 200 flb. One at 3K and one at 4K. Identical torque at different rpm. The V6 needs rpm for the HP sales ploy. That Big Twin HD produces over 100 flb but only 65 HP equivalency. Now you know why HD does not generally publish HP numbers and the diesel spanks the gas engine on the pull test.

Do you recall what RPM it was running in those gears?
