Towing capacity

Hi all,

im planning to buy an gladiator high altitude today. All online information I have state the towing capacity is 6.000lbs. Yesterday the dealership already send me the link to the owner plus page and this one states a towing capacity of 4.690 lbs. the dealership has no clue.Has anyone an idea what could have gone wrong here?

Which transmission does it have, and does it come with the Towing Package?

To get the 6000lb towing capacity, it needs the factory installed towing package and the automatic transmission.

If I recall correctly:

Any gas gladiator with the manual should be rated at 4,000 lbs.

Any gas Gladiator with the auto is rated for at least 6,000 lbs. (like the High Altitude).

A Sport with Max Tow (auto only), 7,650 lbs.

Some of the figures may vary slightly at the final door sticker, or elsewhere.

Edit: As the fella said above me by not buying the factory hitch with the truck, they may rate a different capacity - but that's another debacle all together.

It does have the auto trans and towing package, but I don't see the heavy-duty cooling or the high output alternator on the list. The towing capacity may be affected by the 20 inch wheels.

Look at the tire sidewall aspect...on my Overland, I have 255/75/18s. This one has 275/55/20s.

The overall tire height is the same.

Bigger rims, shorter sidewalls.

Tow package automatically gets better cooling (simply increased fan capacity, same radiator) and higher output alternator to handle the increased load imparted by having a trailer attached whether it's just for lighting or, lighting and keeping the trailer battery charged whilst going down the road with the refrigerator keeping your beer cold

It should be 6k for the towing. The build sheet shows they only charged $645 for the towing package, and it doesn't list the alternator or heavy-duty cooling as included options.

Have your salesman take a picture of the tag on the B pillar inside of the drivers side. That will show exactly what the vehicle you are looking at can do. Sometimes the online stuff can be wrong.

Not certain but isn't there a tow package and also the Max Tow package. You get higher capacity with the Max Tow I believe.

Everybody sees the max number for the trim level they've picked and automatically ASSUME that's what they have.

If you read the disclaimer/qualifier it states that number is for a stripped down, completely stock truck with a 150 pound driver.

So, for every option added, you are subtracting payload and towing weight. As you pack the pounds on with options, the payload/towing pounds come off.

I think the manual Rubicon is rated at 4500.

Could be. I threw these up as approximations. As the other guys said - best to check the door sticker on the specific vehicles in question for the various numbers. The payload, GVWR, and GCVWR will vary a little from truck to truck.

I attached everything you need below. A high Altitude is an upgraded Overland with package 24N (see your window sticker attached for your VIN and the order guide which show the 24N on the overland.), therefore the towing capacity would align in the owners manual to the Overland. So go to the screenshots here from the owners manual and find an overland with your enngie/transmission and that is your towing capacity. You will find it to be 6000.

"Tow package" and "Max Tow Package" are two different options. The tow package adds a Hitch and wiring. Max tow adds hitch, wiring, additional cooling, higher electrical output, wider axles, af gears. The OPs truck has the Tow package but not the max tow.

The real answer has been noted here: the sticker on the B pillar holds the true answer. Take your curb weight, add in the weight of fuel, passengers, and cargo. Subtract that number from the GVWR written on the sticker. That is your maximum tow weight. Don't forget that your truck also has a maximum payload, which includes passengers, cargo, AND tongue weight. There are a lot of numbers that go into towing safely.
