Same one I got and the same place I had it mounted with 3M tape, I moved it after the 3M tape kept failing to stick. I'm in agreement with you on not wanting to lose 12v outlet, that's a WTF are they thinking by using it for brake controller location.I went Curt Spectrum and mounted to the left of the steering wheel since I need my 12voly outlet.
I've used a LOT of that stuff in vehicles, on motorcycles, and all over the house including that side. If it failed to stick it's either fake 3M (common on eBay and some on Amazon) or you didn't clean the surface. For vehicle interiors, 91% isopropyl is a great way to prep it. Wipe wet, wipe dry, repeat, let dry, stick.3M tape kept failing to stick.
