Every morning after it's set all night when I put it in R to back out of the garage, I get a clunk as it engages . Does not do it in D. Does not do it any other time. Is this normal?

You know the reason AT’s don’t clunk into every gear is that they are programmed to slip for smoothness. A rough shift isn’t necessarily the sign of a problem. In all likelihood the combination of drivetrain lash and cold lubricants make audible what normally wouldn’t.

Plus sitting all night and draining . Perhaps letting it warm up some before shifting would help.

I actually throw my truck into neutral, pull up the parking brake, let go of the brake, push the brake back it, and then put it into park. My driveway is on a slight incline so I do that so there isn't any weight on the transmission. Dunno if it actually helps, but that's what I've always done here.

May help you to throw it into neutral for a sec before pushing it all the way into park.

I always Remote Start to get the cabin comfortable, which warms up everything else. I take it from Park to Neutral, then to Drive, then to Reverse. If I go from right from Park to Reverse, I get noise.

When it 's cold all night , about 30's or lower. Mine makes a clunk sound also. Even when I let the engine warm up for a few minutes. I also shift fast into neutral first then drive. When I hit neutral it makes a slight dull sound but no bang. Warmer weather, no problem smooth as silk shifting, also once it warms up in winter.

Anything to do with the idle being higher?

Could be, My truck takes forever to idle down to 700 rpm, I shift the trans when it gets to 900 rpm. Warm weather it idles down fast to 700rpm.

I had this same problem for a couple of months on my gladiator with only 12k miles.
Early morning parked in driveway at a 5% slope. shift to R and it would take a second before a crunch and grabbing the reverse gear.
I didn't think much about it (2 months), but one weekend while driving in town I had a gear slip (3 to 4th) and I had a dash warning "Service Transmission" BUT not check engine light....
Kind of freaked me out, so I took it home an parked it till the next day. I was the 3rd person at the dealership service department. told them the issue and a day later was told the transmission solenoid was bad and needed replaced.
3 days later I called to check on my daily driver, and I was told it was the input shaft that was bad, and A new kit was ordered.
3 days later, I called back to check on my gladiator and was told the kit did not have all the parts, and waited another 5 days for a new kit.
3 weeks after taking it to the stealership I finally got my jeep back with over $3k in parts (free with std mopar warranty)
I HIGHLY recommend taking your jeep to be looked at. I hope it is still under manufactures warranty.

No I don't think it is normal because mine didn't do that originally. It has just aged and now it does anytime I mean anytime it is below operating temp . I am just dealing with it for the meantime eventually gonna slap a replacement tranny in mine this year. Probably later this year. If it successfully holds out that long.

Yeah mine did that for about 40-45k started around 60k and now at 119k it does it anytime the tranny isn't hot at operational temps. It really started getting bad about 110k

I now let it warm till the idle is lower and it doesn't; do it as bad but a small clunk is still there. Is this going to eventually require a repair. I fear to take it to the dealer due to all my mods. Tires, lift, gears.
