I heard they’re basically the same the 8HP75 imported from Germany while the 850RE is assembled by FCA
No. Those numbers refer to torque handling. The 50 is not the same as the 75.
8 defines the number of forward gears or speeds.
H is hydraulic converter
P is planetary gear sets.
So any of this design is 8HP as far as ZF is concerned.
The 70, 75, 50 and so on are the torque handling ability in NM (Newton/Meters) so a 70 can handle 700 NM, a 50 can handle 500 NM and so on.

I am not an expert on either model but there has to be a mechanical difference somewhere to make Jeep source one from Germany and the other built here in house by them.
Numbers - manufacturing capability. ZF could not meet the demand for the 850. It's used in so many vehicles.

It's purely about the ability to keep up. MOPAR had the facility and some equipment, ZF in I believe it was SC could not keep up so they reached a licensing agreement.
It's all about meeting demand.

You mean all 4 out of how many million?

These have been used in the Grand Cherokee for the last almost 10 years - think if the numbers of those sold with the basic 3.6 Hundreds of thousands.............
If 10 people here said they had the 850 fail, I'd still not see that as a danger sign considering the many years these have been in hundreds of thousand of vehicles, trucks and cars alike
(probably millions considering the RAM trucks on the road and the fact we see dozens of WK Jeeps out there every time we drive to town)

To reply about the rental car question from Jeep, my 2014 JKUR had just over 60000 miles so it was out of the power train warranty. I developed, what we thought was a transmission issue. I took to a dealership that I didn’t buy it from in a different state and thru JEEPCARES, got a ‘good will’ coverage from Jeep and provided me a brand new Charger for weeks while they worked on the issue - zero cost to me! JEEPCARES was outstanding….. Call them!

My Mojave has a recent failure with its transmission (8–Speed Automatic 850RE Transmission), only 14k miles. Just stopped moving when I was only driving at 10-15mph, lights started flashing on the shifter display, check engine light. Had it towed to the dealer, when the dealer tech drained the fluid he observed it with burnt oil and metal, order placed for a new transmission under warranty, however no current eta.

there was no warning sign before this failure.

You should see what the dealer has to do in order to get paid for batteries! It's a heck of a process.
It ain't all on the dealer - they want to get paid, too.
Today changed the batteries, thought it would be a quick in and out, man was I wrong. 3 hours testing for both another 30 min install through the fender liner. Happy to have them covered but was not expecting a 4 hour total turn around for just batteries.
