Theoretically the back seat storage area is a nicely contained area for storage under the seats. However when you have kid's car seats installed you can't flip up the seats to access this area. My easiest solution was to remove plastic 'boundary' so now I can take advantage of the area under the seat AND have quick access to my jack and bolt's bin when necessary.

How hard is it to get to the hard top bolts with the child seats installed? Do you have to remove the seats when removing/installing the top?

Nice to see you aren’t tied into the bins. My underseat area ends up holding an axe, hatchet, come along, field spade gloves, webbing and choke chain. All the long parts of my recovery gear.

On family journeys it ends up holding all the books and toys and blankies and pillows that children can’t seem to live without.

Funny you ask! I just ran into this conundrum on Friday. Took the top off and went to store the bolts and realized I couldn't easily access the bin. Oh well. Now I think I'll remove the bolts bin to give me even more room under the seat.

I was referring to removing the bolts that fasten the hardtop from behind the seat. I don’t have a JT yet but I’ve seen videos of the top being removed and it looked like it might be hard to get at those bolts with kid seat installed.
Good to know about the bolt storage bin though!

Oh sorry. Yes, PITA. Had to remove the car seats first then do everything else. Likely won't do this again for a while :headbang:

Silly me, I thought the "plastic boundary" was more less just to provide support to the seat bottoms. I learned something new.

Thank you! This makes the under seat storage usable with child seats. Also removed the bolt box and it’s the perfect size for a roll of shop towels!

Good idea on this! My back seat looks the same as yours (I have twin 3 year olds). We had our first pretty good head wound requiring stitches and when I went to grab my first aid kit...it was stuck under the seat in the car seats. I will be following your lead on this.

Nice! For the next couple months I still have one kid in the smaller base, which still lets me fold it up for now.

I put toys/blankets and anything that will blow away down there when the top/front doors come off. While having access to that space would be great, I would probably like a way to keep stuff contained under there.

I have a small cargo next that came with my wife's Outback... it's the perfect size to cover that gap. I just wonder if there's any way to actually attach it at the four corners? Other than some improvised velcro I'm not sure it'd be feasible.

Easy to do and if you have dogs it gives them a spot to jump up, you don't lose any storage, you just have to make it stuff that is not going to slid around.

3 years later, how are you liking this setup? Have you done anything to make it work better for you? We’ve got two in car seats now (2 and 1 years old) and we’ll be adding a third in October of this year. You’re the only person I’ve seen that figured out a way for me to still be able to use the under seat storage, so a huge thank you to you man! I’ll be removing the bin this week now

Well, 3 years later and the kiddos are out of car seats so I reinstalled the storage bin. But until that time it worked out well!

Removing the storage bin is definitely the way to go if you have car seats! It’s the only way to actually be able to utilize that storage space under the seats

@Danny_ thanks for posting your picture with the car seats. We’re going to need a second car seat soon and trying to find narrow seats that will allow us to have a third person to ride in the middle. We won’t drive with 3 in the back daily, but on occasion it would be helpful.

Do you feel like that’s possible with your Radian 3R’s?
