Our plan was to spend a year or two bed-tent camping and renting pop-ups and small trailers.
If your renting just small campers like pop ups you shouldn't need WDH. I pull a 16' fiberglass and don't need one. You are one of the few wise enough to try your truck out on campers before spending money.

Can you use them on an aluma trailer. I’m told mixed things.
thanks

Yes you can, the issue is the install. Some Alum trailers you should not drill the mounting plates through the frame. Others it's ok, you need to ask the manufacture. If drilling is not an option you need a WD kit that bolts on like a clamp vs drilling through.

Alum is softer than steel, so the mounting is different.

I'm looking to rent a 6' x 12' Uhaul trailer to haul stuff about 600 miles away. Is a WDH recommended? Sorry if it seems like a stupid question. :)

I have the Max Tow.

Just situate the stuff evenly on the trailer and you should be fine.
