I use a hybrid bottle jack/ jack stand that I trust in any situation. it allows you to lock in the height when it’s in use, so you don’t have to worry about it failing. There isnt any easy way to store it, so it lives on the floor in the back seat if I’m doing anything that may require it to make an appearance, but I love this thing.

+1 to this...I have a different brand but it is essentially the same jack

However, that jack is a bit heavy to carry on the trails, so I carry 2 foot long sections of 4x4 bolted together to use as a base for the factory scissor jack (needed the extra height for my 37's). The 4X4's are not treated so they can serve as firewood if I'm stranded on a cold and stormy night...

I carry a bottle jack and pieces of wood to space it as needed. Don't forget a couple pieces of 4x4 as wheel chocks.

... it works fine so long as the vehicle is reasonably level.
I feel like this applies to any jack. I kind of like the base idea since it takes up little space and uses what I've got.

Check out Safe Jack. They have all kinds of extensions and accessories for bottle jacks and high lift jacks, as well as complete kits. I have one that I ve used a few times and am quite happy with it. I got rid of my scissors jack.

Thought I’d throw in a pic of what 2 4x4 wood blocks, a drill, and a couple nuts, bolts and washers can do. Use a router for a little flourish!!!
