I added my Hooke Road side steps to my '23 Freedom edition.

They have re-engineered these since the last set I had on my '21.

They have contoured the bars to fit the cab better, as the previous ones where just straight, making the rear side stick out a bit more, showing the under seam where the mounting holes are.

Here is a comparison...

Original set:

People Work?
My first DIY filters change on the EcoDiesel Gladiator. Other than my FRS which came with free oil changes for life, I’ve always done my own maintenance, but I’ve been using my free Jeep Wave changes until now mostly being pissed at the dealership afterwards.

After doing this, I have thoughts:
  1. I have no idea how my dealership managed to coat the entire truck with oil when they changed it last time. Based on that, I figured this would make a mess, but the cup where the filter housing screws in catches all of the excess oil. With just a rag to catch the drippings when I removed the filter, I spilled zero oil
  2. 25NM is 18.43 ft/lbs is not very tight. The filter gets tight at first and then loosens up before finally tightening down. I also have no idea how my dealership got this wrong too. I was left stranded, with the truck throwing a no oil pressure code. They did update the ECU, after it was towed back. My understanding is the issue is a too loose filter, not too tight, so did they just leave the damn filter loose?
  3. When I started the truck I immediately got a no oil pressure warning. The gauge indicated it had pressure. The light didn’t go away so I turned the truck off and started it again. The no oil pressure warning and oil light were off and stayed off. This engines electronics are flaky and weird with the air flow and this oil change weirdness. I get the immediate warning but you’d think it would clear on its own and not require a restart or would be persistent.
  4. I’m not taking my truck back to a dealership for any maintenance again, free or not. Also with the 27MM hex on the filter and the rather high mounting of the filter, this is one of the easiest oil changes I’ve ever had to do. Also I found the Penzoil Euro Platinum on Amazon for around $7.50/qt. My dealership wanted over $12. They wanted $110 for the oil filter. I got it for $73 at MoparPartsGiant. It was a similar delta for all the rest of the stuff.

  5. I also did my air filter. I’m curious to see how much cleaner my snorkel keeps the filter. On my TJ, it did a lot. I was a cheap bastard so I didn’t change the dirty filter when I installed the snorkel. It looks about the same.
    IMG_2976.jpeg
  6. I changed the fuel filter. I’m not super happy about this whole deal. The skid skid bucket sucks. The bolts are stupid long and I don’t know if they screw into sheet metal or pudding but they feel weird. The cap feels weird and screechy when loosening it. The o-ring stretches out considerably. Filter was dirty but I’ve seen worse. What really bothered me was the priming. I primed it at least 10 times. The pump sounded weird, like the scratchy friction sound of the filter housing. The tone never changed. This is a new recall replacement pump, btw. It still wasn’t primed and had to run for about 5-10 seconds before starting. I’m not really bothered by that beyond the priming accomplishing nothing. If running a vehicle fuel pump dry-ish for 10 seconds damages it, time to ghost ride the truck off a cliff. But it also had to run for several seconds the second time I started it! After that, it’s been fine. I’m planning on getting a belly skid sometime this year. That filter housing seems like a liability and there’s a Lite-Brite video of a guy smashing his on the Rubicon with the stock skid
    IMG_2979.jpeg
  7. Cabin Air filter. I ordered the filter based on the Mopar parts site diagram. But there were two filters, not one. I’ve now read the thread on this silliness. I ran to Napa and got a big filter. I’m glad I changed them. They looked like squirrel nests.

The diesels may not do this, but on the gas engines you can hold the accelerator down and the brake down while pushing the START button, and it won't start. It'll just turn over and build pressure. May not work on the diesel due to the lack of need for spark.

Yeah, you prime the pump by turning the truck to on/run with your foot off the brake pedal. You’re supposed to do this twice. I could hear the pump running and did it a bunch of times. It just wasn’t enough. The fuel filter and its cup/cap is pretty large.

After neary 2 weeks of heavy off and on rain… I got up at 7 am and did a full detail inside and out to include washing underneath, cleaning the engine and ceramic spray waxing…

I do like when its fully cleaned up!

I am always down to help someone clean a vehcile. For me it’s therapeutic. I used to do it as a big side hustle and still do.

If in the Atlanta area at any point (temps above 40 please), I will help. Only cost a pizza :)

That’s about 1700 miles. I’ll let you know when I leave so you can be ready with the sponge. I’ll bring the pizza and beer.
