Welp, my service 4wd light showed that it didnt wanna let me have 4wd. So I did a bunch of trails at Windrock today in only RWD with a rear locker. Winched twice. Even completed BOH 26 again but in 2wd this time.
You didn’t have 4wd? Mine has come on sporadically since new. Dealership was useless the several times I took it in to have them look at it. I’ve always had 4wd though.

Yup. My FAD is bad. So I had no front axle.

you can manually engage the FAD if remove it and lock it over with a hose clamp and put it back on

I am yet to understand how in a state that locks up the engine bay ... and restricts everything else to save the environment you can unabashed run the dunes and rocks on public land .... yet here in NH no emissions or inspections not even a seat belt law.... yet we get one small off road park and if my tires hit the beach I'm getting fined

Yea, it’s very surreal driving on, feels wrong since it’s California, but an amazing experience and view. Don’t worry though, the California Costal Commission tries everything in the book every year to get it shutdown. Not sure how they have kept it open, but glad they have.

the closed thing to the dunes is Cape cod national seashore ... an as much as I hate to admit it Mass is officially worse then CA (I've been stationed in both) its a national park yet they have it restricted to driving straight line no speed

FULL DISCLOSURE - Here's the story that accompanies those stunning photos.

After we are done playing in the snow, go to start the Jeep, engage into Drive, and instead of going forward the Jeep slides backwards and towards the edge of the cliff!!!

There is barely 2 inches of fresh snow on the trail in this area but it is a sheet of ice under it.

I get out of the truck to take a look - my rear passenger tire is 2 inches off the edge!

It is a 300-foot drop!!! 😱😱😱

We have no phone reception and are 50 miles from civilization.

I get back inside, engage 4-Lo, then the rear locker, then the front locker, but the Jeep still refuses to move forward. I have Rosie tethered in the back and my balls in my throat.

Think Aldo, think!!

I have the clarity of mind to air all four tires down to 15 PSI. Get back inside and this time the Jeep gently slides away from the edge enough for me to calm down. But I still cannot move forward, let alone turn around.

We go down in reverse very slowly for a couple miles. At one point, with my foot planted on the brakes, we slide down completely out of control for 60 or 80 yards, gathering speed...until we get caught in a rock.

All I can do is keep my eyes glued at the side mirror, the front wheels pointed at the mountain, and pray! Gawd I haven't prayed like this ever before!

I keep checking on Rosie through my rear-view mirror. I can only see the back of her head as she keeps staring out the back of the truck. She does seem worried.

Forty-five minutes later we finally make it to a spot where the trees keep the trail clear of ice and is wide enough to do a six point turn.

We head down to the trailhead, pump my tires back to 37 PSI and get us home.

Home never felt so warm and safe.

Lots to give thanks for this upcoming Thanksgiving!
Wow. Yeah. Holy crap. Time for that winch. I bet that was scary as sh!t.

LOL!

All I can say is: sliding down a narrow shelf road with your foot stomped on the brakes and NO control is one of the scariest things!
100%. I’m wondering if 4low was winning against the brakes. Or were you sliding on ice? And this was backwards? That’s messed up.
