Same, not a fan of the smokey flavor. I picked up a Lagavulin 18 and it tastes like volcanic ash.
Laguvalin is the most amazing whiskey I have ever had in my entire life. I am never without a bottle of the regular 16 year, I pretty much always have three or four bottles of their special edition stuff as well.

When I purchased I was confident I would enjoy but man that burn type flavor. I'll give it another shot soon. Did you build up a taste for it or like it right off the bat?

Personally I loved it from the first sip. Alot of my friends don’t care for it. I have also noticed that Laguvalin is one the on,y smoky whiskys I enjoy. (of the ones I’ve tried)

I’ve tried some Laphroig and Ardberg - didn’t care fir the taste.

It does take a couple of sips to get dialed in and settled down.

Further recommendations.
If you're a milk drinker nothing tastes better after a finger or two of Scotch. Any Scotch.
I know that probably sounds all wrong but it's addictive, or at least it was for me.

Along the same lines, and I just discovered this a couple of years ago after-partying with a touring folk band who played a concert for us at the house and hung out for a few days, but Sweet Jesus! Some warmed apple crisp with vanilla ice cream and Scotch, ... Everything compliments everything else perfectly. So good!

The closest I've gotten to sweets with Scotch is some Ghardellis chocolate squares.

Macallan 12. My “every day” whisky

Have you done their sherry cask? I've been through a bottle of both and think it's a notch above.

I think I've had that. I'm always trying different ones.
Oh yeah, chocolate goes very well with Scotch!

Round 3 with the Laphroaig this time accompanied with a cigar and the smoke flavor (which to me is more like cough syrup flavor) has really tamed down. I will say it comes across as lighter bodied than the Macallan or Glenlivet. I'll try it neat next time and see where that goes.

I think this stuff is bipolar. (Can't be me, nope.)
Last night- cough syrup.
This evening- not too bad, neat. This will be my last bottle though.

Just got back from my first cruise (recommend) and while at Coco Cay (don't recommend) I asked a bartender for a skinny margarita. He asked what I meant so I gave him the ingredients, one of which is soda water. He turned his nose up and said no. Lol he wasn't gonna make it so I asked him what his ingredients were and initially he didn't want to tell but quickly relented with "orange, lime, patron and triple sec."
"No water, soda water?"
"No!"
So I watched the guy muddle equal amounts of lime and orange chunks, cover w ice, then tequila and triple sec over the ice, then strain that into a glass of ice.

It was the best Margarita I've ever had and I've had a few.

After getting home I've been trying to replicate that success but am coming way short. Working on proportions but have gone through too limey, too orangey, and too sweet.

If anyone knows this recipe and wants to help my liver out through the trial and error process, feel free to pipe up!

My old recipe which I thought was great until last week:

2-3 oz 1800 Silver depending on desired strength.
1oz lime juice
1 tsp to 1 tbsp dark agave syrup depending on desired sweetness.
Fill to 8 oz with either sparkling soda water in regular, lime, or watermelon (try it) flavored.
Pour over ice cubes.
No salt!
