First, I've read a whole bunch of threads on here regarding wheel size, tire size and backspacing. And there are lots of opinions on how people like the look or not with wheel poke. I'm trying to find out if there's truly anything I should be concerned with harming my Gladiator with a specific wheel tire setup. Here's the situation:
  • Current setup
    • JTSS Mopar gloss black wheels (17x7.5 +44mm) and tires (245/75r17) with no lift
  • Consideration
    • AGP Trux wheels 17x9 -12mm offset on 285/70r17 and will probably do TeraFlex leveling kit
I really love the look of the AGP Trux wheels but know that I will get considerable poke. The wheel offset visualizer shows that the outer sidewall is out 3" further. I'm going to have one put on next Monday to actually see what it looks like. However, will this cause potential damage to any of my suspension components with the change? I've seen varying posts that say yes and no. TIA!

I wouldn't say it would be detrimental to any suspension components although a -12 is a decent amount of poke. More than my liking. I personally stay around a 0. I literally just got new black rhinos with a 0 offset last week. Perfect amount of poke for me.

I say you'll be fine. I've seen tons with that amount and more.

You'll still be fine regardless of offset. Your ball joints might go out at 53k miles instead of 56k miles, and your wheel bearings might only make it to 98k miles instead of 103k miles. You will lose some turning radius, so expect to borrow a 4th lane when making a U-Turn now, but other than that no negatives. Good looking wheels.

The more off-center you push them out the more load and stress you're putting on stock ball joints, wheel bearings, steering geometry, etc.
You'd have been fine with zero to +12.
Thanks for your input! I haven't purchased them yet. The local rep is going to throw one on the front next week so I can decide. AGP also makes a bronze wheel called Trail Warrior that is 17x8.5 with 0 offset that I may consider.

Here's my new ones with a 0. They're 18x9. Same amount of poke I had before on my stock wheels which were a +44 although I had 1.75" spacer with them. Obviously the new ones didn't need a spacer to achieve the look I wanted. So I ditched the spacers.

Not the best pics from a direct side angle to show the poke. But it's like an inch and a half roughly.

285-245=40 (/2 since it's in each direction) for 20mm. +44 to -12 gives you 56mm. so 76mm/25.4 is almost exactly 3 inches further out than you currently are. The visualizer you used was correct.

Just take a tape measure to your tires and imagine, or if you really need a visual throw your jeep on a jackstand and move a current wheel/tire 3 inches out so you can see it from all angles.

I do IT stuff so I can buy Jeep stuff.
double check your numbers on the offset visualizer.
You will lose some turning radius
Can you explain how offset affects the turning radius? I'm not saying you are wrong. I am honestly just trying to understand the geometry related to this.

Simple, a wider track requires more turning radius to make the same turn. I couldn’t tell you the science or numbers behind it, but I could definitely tell the difference when I put my 37s on with -12 offset. My Silverado was the same way, I had 20x12 -44 on that and felt a noticeable difference

@bshenderson1 sorry - I thought I had deleted that comment about double checking before I wrote my question about turning radius - didn't mean to hassle you. :)

A 4th lane? What lol.
