Hi everyone. New to the site. I have a 2022 JT overland and I have around 3000 miles on it. Anyone have whistle or a winding noise when you accelerate?? Only hear it after driving for a while and the engine gets hot. Even louder on the hot summer days. Most noticeable when below 15 MPH due to less engine noise. I’ve owned a JL, JK, and a durango all with the same 3.6 engine and this is a first for me. It’s starting to drive me nuts!! I’m going for my first oil change next month and going to have dealership take a look but I already know if it doesn’t throw a code they will tell me it’s “normal”

Any engine upgrades? Intake? Throttle body spacer?

hard or soft top?

head wind?

High winds?

speed dependent? Or do you hear it at higher speeds as well?

a bit more info will help

Good questions. Have not done any upgrades because of the noise. Did not want the dealership to say it was me. Hard top. Definitely not wind because it happens even when I’m idling and their is no breeze. You can hear it winding down as I’m slowing down and stops then when I begin to accelerate you hear it start again. Sounds like a low tea kettle type whistle.

I was anticipating wind since a little wind whistle is common on these.

have you popped the hood and double checked your intake? I had a similar whistle on mine when i came put an intake on that didnt have the little sound chambers on it. My issue was that w/o those chambers i could hear the engines natural respirations. Makes me think perhaps you have a loose fitting somewhere along the intake. Maybe

Definitely not wind because it happens even when I’m idling and their is no breeze.
Then it should be easy for the dealer to hear.

Mine does it too. Kinda sounds like a turbo but it’s pretty faint. I hear it in first and second around 2k rpm. It’s my 3rd 3.6 and the only one that whistles. I never did look into it, just ignored it. I’m at 61k with zero issues but it still whistles.

Mine does it. Radio off. Near idle or low speed. Almost sounds like radio interference. Drives me nuts, so I just turn the radio up.

You may be describing the same noise (like a turbo spooling up) in first and second gear, very faint but annoying I had in my second 8 speed transmission (which was replaced). 3rd transmission was doing it the same day I picked it up.

The service manager said (with the second transmission) the tech located the whine noise to be coming from the bell housing and noted it on the service order. He said possible planetary gear issues and it got replaced.

After receiving the 3rd transmission, I had to go on a trip right away to BC (about 1000 km round trip) and I noticed the same whine noise in 1st and 2nd gear under medium to heavy acceleration. Wasn’t there under light acceleration.

I informed the service manager again and he advised I just keep driving it and we don’t “open the can of worms” as “engineer department said the whine is normal”.

I said to him if that’s the case how was the 3rd transmission approved for replacement?? He said engineers approved the replacement but said if they find nothing wrong with it when they tear it down, the dealership will be charged back the cost.

Doesn’t that put the dealership in a vulnerable situation?! There will be no proof of tear down and the techs at the dealership can’t do it so they are are at the mercy of FCA.

Since informing the service manager of the whine in the 3rd transmission, the noise has migrated to include 4th gear. I’m at about 5k km on the 3rd tranny.

Ho-Lee-Chit,

I just experienced this and was going to come to make a post about it. Then I wondered how I'd explain the sound - love the turbo comparison. Next, was how to avoid all the "its wind noise because jeeps are a brick on wheels" that we all commonly say.

Yet, my experience is a little different. First time I heard it was when off-roading, so the radio was off and I was concentrating on every sound and feedback response. It was during a time came upon an open sandy road stretch where I was in 4-Hi and cruising vs rock crawling.

I've since duplicated it on city streets in 2-Hi, so the 4wd part has nothing to do with it. I can reliably trigger my whistle noise by accelerating from a stop and hitting around 4k RPMs at just over 30 mph (so not flooring it, but pulling pretty good). Once it shifts to a higher gear (lower RPM) and the speed climbs past 40, it's gone. I tried to rev to 4k in neutral to see if it was solely an engine sound, but the Jeep engineers won't let me - it maxes at 3k. I've tried on the highway to trigger it by hitting 4k RPM in a higher gear, but don't hear the noise then.

It's just a weird phenomenon that has me more curious than anything.
