Why do you think the EPA fuel ratings dropped for 2024 4-cylinder turbo?

I'm not a member of the Wrangler forums, but thinking about ordering a 2024 Wrangler for my wife.

MPG ratings for the 2024 show 20mpg city/ 20mpg highway. The 2023 shows 21mpg city / 24 mpg highway.

Why did the mpg change? (I guesss I should have said "Why do you think the mpg ratings changed?") :D

The combined rating went from 22 down to 20!

Also the smog rating changed as well. It was either a change in the pollution control devises mandated by the EPA or a change in how these are calculated to give you a more realistic rating…

There's a lot of reasons and no one here will have the answer. You are asking for everyone to throw darts and see which ones may stick

Vehicle weight, tire choice, emissions changes (those change yearly).
Example -Jeep has to reapply every year to keep certain things approved. Evaporative emissions control systems have to be re-approved (at least submissions made on paper).
Jeep and other auto makers, do their own approval. It's a rather complex formula, but emissions are rated in part on the fuel consumed. This could be a tweaking of the math to meet emissions standards and avoid fines. They may have been audited, who knows.
Shape, weight, tires, and other factors impact mpg. And what you see on that sticker is based on the tests EPA prescribes - for all we know, they changed the criteria as far as speed, number of stops, time spent idling and more.

May as well ask why El Nino is happening - it's almost that complex.

You don't buy a Wrangler for MPGs.........there I was the first to say it.

My wifes JLUR with the 2.0t with eTorque avg 19.0 combined. My JTM 3.6......a laughable 13.2

Great, thanks a lot for bursting my bubble. Make me look silly for thinking it might get mpg better than my Chevy did. Oh, wait - it DOES - including while towing.
But it barely does better than my 2004 WJ with 4.0
Ouch.

My wife hit 50 MPGe with her JLU the other day. Then her ICE kicked in and it dropped to into the 30s.
But get some wind - like we usually have, and you can get into my dual-quad Jav and match her JLU mpg.

Frankly, I figure a brick sitting way up in the air with an exposed belly grabbing air and tires that act like paddlewheels in the wind getting 20 is WOW, that's AMAZING!

Anyway, I bet you don't mind paying for the fun with a little hit on the mpg, eh?

Must be the weight from the electric seats.
Damn, do they have a parachute as well in case you have to eject?
You may not be far off, those in all seriousness.
My 2022 Overland was rated a lot less on payload although the equipment was identical save for the Selec-Trac. So I'm guessing the extra weight of that t-case may have helped, and anyone who has pulled electric seats out of a Jeep knows those @#$% are heavy.

With cramming the 4XE into the Gladiator and dropping the HEMI from the product matrix they can quit fudging the numbers of the other vehicles...

4 mpg highway is a big drop if that's accurate.
My bet is that it's a correction, not a drop. It's truly hard to imagine 24, but it's very easy to imagine 20. 22 maybe for Sahara, a lighter vehicle with more MPG friendly tires. The tires that come on the Rubicon are anti-MPG. It's a lot of mass, a lot of rolling resistance.
Who knows, could be the calculations were inaccurate, the methods were inaccurate, or they had to make corrections to avoid more FINES.

It could be only the window sticker is changing, not the real-world MPG.

We're all shooting with a blindfold on.

By drop, I mean drop in the rating. Whether it's a correction or a physical change, it still seems like a pretty big drop, definitely not common.

Gotcha and agreed. Even a "correction", IF that's what it was, would be a big drop if that much.
