I had a mishap in the desert this weekend going to a night run. My rear tire took what looks like a Pinion differential lock bolt. I guess people throw all kinds of crap into the desert... ugh... Anyway, I put on my spare, and when I got home I plugged the hole with the Safety Seal kit, and it is holding air, but, I have not re-mounted it on the truck.... I am thinking that tire is history.... -- 37x12.5x17 Yokohama Geolandar G003 MT/R.. I have an appointment with America's Tire to see if they will patch it from inside, but, I predict they will not touch it with the big hole being so close to the sidewall. What do you guys think, is this tire history ?

Nope.

If it was a trail fix to get you back to the trailhead....sure, but for road use.....absolutely not

Take it to a tire shop you trust and have them break it off the rim to inspect it inside, rule of thumb anything side wall damaged is now junk, yours looks to be on the top of the tread surface, and that can be repaired. Good Luck

Not sure it is worth the risk even with a tire shop signing off. But that is personal opinion. If you want to use it for sure take it to a tire shop you trust and let them inspect it.

Do you have road damage coverage on the tires? Discount Tire offers such a thing and they are great to work with when things like this happen.

Note: America's Tire/Discount Tire are the same company - depending on state.... I declined the road hazard when I bought the tires there.... I did not want to pay additional money... lol... In retrospec, I should have bought it. These tires have about 15K miles left on them, but, I may just swap them all out. My spare is also a 37, but, it is a different brand with different tread, but, still an MT... These Yokohamas were great tires, and I would buy them again, but, I may use the opportunity to go with MICKEY THOMPSON BAJA BOSS M/T 37X12.50R17... I have seen these Mickeys really stick on the rocks... I just had not budgeted for tires for at least another 6 months or so... These toyos were $100 cheaper per tire than the Mickeys are now, roughly 2 years ago when I bought them.

Lesson learned, I budget for the coverage on any tire over 250 bucks. Keep in mind they have a couple of different coverage policies, some with more strings then others, i usually get the full coverage no questions asked policy, adds about 40 bucks to each tire.

Too close to the sidewall. Any legit shop will tell you the tire needs to be replaced.......if they say otherwise....they're dead fuckin wrong.

If you want to be a moving liability to you, your family and everyone else on the road........do what your estate and finances can handle. Your insurance company will surely deny your claim if shit goes sideways. Just letting you know. I've worked in the industry for too long

I wouldn't trust it because that part of the tire probably has no steel belt, so the plug might not hold on the Highway. I had a plug fly out in this scenario. That’s when I learned why TPMS is valuable.
I picked up a bolt about that same diameter. It was right in the corner. When I removed the bolt, I could feel the steel reinforcement catching the threads of the bolt. I put a plug in it and used it as a spare. I did need the spare later on. It got me home about 250 miles. The next morning it was almost flat. The steel reinforcement had cut the plug in half.

I would try a repair like that again, but just to get me home. I probably would not use a repair like that for a spare.

Most shops will not plug or patch a tire that close to the corner.

The tires look like they are close to the end of their life...I'd find a tire shop that will patch it from the inside and run it

I'd patch it and use it as a spare atleast. I had a similar size lag bolt penetrate a new tire and drove another 20 some thousand miles before I traded the truck with the original tires on it. The spare never went on the truck and if I hadn't lost 5 lbs more of air in that tire overnight than the others I wouldn't have noticed

hell yes she's good to use still! Just double up on the plug material if you need to. And put her on the rear so if it fails you can still steer to the shoulder if it goes flat.

Torque it to spec and send it.

Don't do this, that tire is toast and has to be replaced. That close to the sidewall is not patchable, the tire there sees way too much flex with every rotation and it's unsafe. At crawling speeds you can get away with a plug because you aren't doing more than about 15 mph. No reputable shop will patch that - and for good reason.

Yes, I would definitely run that. Double plug it if you have to. It is in the tread, not the sidewall. You are not running 100 mph anywhere with those 37"s. Run it and keep an eye on the pressure.
An actual patch from the inside would be ideal, but I would not hesitate to drive that. Rotate it to the rear axle and run it.
If you have any mom and pop tire shops around, ask the ol'man what he thinks of it. Any big box shop is going to tell you it is no good just to cover their butt. If you were made of money, you would have bought new without even asking.
