I have been watching some rivian videos lately. It seems like a pretty capable tuck BUT I don't see any head to head comparison vs a gladiator rubicon (off road). IS that because it really can't cut it on a tough trail? any one find any links comparing the 2. off road. on rocky trails? what do you all think of the Rvivan?

Considering the whole main body underside of a RIVIAN is the battery pack and easily $10K to replace, only an idiot would seriously trail one on anything with large rocks and boulders. RIVIAN is already a 7K pound vehicle and to up-armor the underside would not do it any favors.

I saw one with temp plates on a level 2 (onX app scale) in Colorado. I’m not sure how far up the 15 mile trail he went, but there weren’t any obstacles on the trail.

I saw him at the bottom of the trail too, it looked like he had an air-up kit in the pass through storage.

Not for me but this guy
Jeep Gladiator Gladiator vs rivian 32C664D7-FC36-4603-8BAA-5B9E74DB522E
uses his like a truck. Not really a rock crawler though. I was surprised how small it is.

Adjustable air suspension is fun, and the maxed out clearance is pretty decent at 15". But it also means that at max it basically has no down travel. But with independent drive per wheel, it won't suffer the same traction issues of traditional axles either. It'll be interesting to see more severe testing.

Obviously off-road range will be the great issue. Plenty of tesla SUV drivers have tried out charging from generators and jerry cans, which in tests I've seen works out to 10-15mpg. We'll probably see this on youtube soon. I certainly wouldn't want to camp with a large generator running all night... though I've certainly camped around other people who don't seem to mind (I usually just move camp)

it is an interesting vehicle. I saw some videos of it off-road and it seemed to do ok a lot of wheel spin though, New battery pack supposed gets over 400 miles but that is on the road testing. Most seem to get 275-300. I have yet to find any videos that show how far you can go off-road. it does have full armor under the whole truck it also has a built-in compressor to air up and down with 20ft of hose. a few fatal flaws for me however
1. NO car play in a supposedly high-tech vehicle is unforgivable.
2. Prices are pushing 125K where i have seen them advertised
3. how long do batttery pacs last? I have no idea
4. No way to add a winch>>>> means stay away from mud.... Hmmm

but I suppose if they got these items taken care of and the price drops to 65K or so and if you had a really good solar array with a big ass battery to store the power so you could charge at your house. It might be really cool

JEEP are you paying attention here.? seems like ford is.

EV still has a way to go to be a viable comparison. It’s for those who have the money to buy a Mercedes AMG 63 and want to virtual signal their global contribution. Although it’s not really doing this. It’s not yet for the rest of us peasants that need to drive a few hundred miles away to wheel and be back to work come Monday in the same vehicle Give it 10 years

still waiting to see that 1st EV semi on the road.

A guy at my work has one and it is parked next to me. Real pretty. If I had one I would not take it off road….125K vehicle? Keep it Jeep.

Anyway, you asked about range…. here you go. Shorter rounds trips..good. Long trips like Jeeps take? Not yet. Is something occurs and you run out of charge, you have to be towed to a charge station. There is no other way at this point to provide energy to an EV that is empty.

Has less moving parts, which is in its favor and it is under armored.

It's the future, but not here yet. Good ideas and concepts for sure.
I have seen them around town. They look tiny next to my JT.

First video 7:38...he has to level out to get his seatbelt back on?

Dumb. But I am sure you can program that to go away.

There are a ton of Rivians here in Orange County. I actually like the truck, but I wouldn't own one...yet.

For EVs to exist as a true automotive replacement to ICE, solar energy needs to be utilized and as a result, solar technology needs to advance. But the solar landscape is still not dialed in yet. Not close. There are so many capabilities with solar technology, but there are factors that play against it. Global supply and material issues are one main factor that are keeping costs so high. Also the solar cell is still not where it needs to be with regard to high efficiency of converting solar light to solar energy. We'll get there, but in the meantime, I'll pass on bogging down the energy grid and paying for a $100K+ compromised truck.

I'd like one as a commuter and add to the garage but I would never replace my Gladiator with it.

No convertible. Make it a convertible and I'm very interested. And make it cost what my gladiator costs, even counting the gas

How small it is? Lol ok. They’re wider than an F-150 and roughly the same length as a gladiator.

this 100%

IF I could charge one fully in the back country in 30 minutes with portable solar panels....

Plus...I really want to see a modded one. Put it on 37s. Do the Jeep shit....
Be interesting to do a comparative analysis after you add all the off road bits. LED would drain the battery minimally....I'd guess...
We can look at the loss in MPG and range when we take a stock JT and mod it...
Do the same with the Rivian....what's the range on larger tires and with the added weight of rock sliders....winch....etc...
Then look for a significant difference between the two.
