So I just dropped off my 20’ JTR for a rear window replacement due to leaking and plastic with micro cracks apparently. Got it. Easy enough, but when talking to the Jeep dealer service department they have never seen a “factory headliner” installed. That’s concern 1. Concern 2 is the fact they are now going to drive the Jeep to a third party to get window replaced. Concern 3 is if the dealer has never had one with a headliner installed how can I believe that the 3rd party won’t mess it up trying to replace it. I took a walk around video and tons of pictures inside and out with a date and time stamp just in case, but I’m actually worried. Oh and apparently I don’t qualify for a loaner so now have to get shuttled to work (only within 10 miles) and find my own way back. Not a happy camper this morning. I don’t drink Coffee so a caffeine fix is needed! Tell me it’s going to be ok!?!

It's going to be ok. Nothing is out of the ordinary there.

1.) Headliners aren't as common as the forum would make you think, so it's completely in the realm of possibility that the one person you talked to hasn't seen one in-person until yours. But that doesn't mean there's never been one serviced with a headliner either, or that it's going to cause an issue.

2.) Sending out glass work is the most common practice, so nothing odd there.

3.) The 'third party' glass shop is going to be the most qualified to do the work (one of the reasons the dealership sends it out). You documented how it left your possession, so if something is to go wrong, you can pull up your photos and get it fixed. Both the dealership and the glass shop have coverage in case something goes wrong.

Don't worry too much. This is all common practice. You've got the same risk of something getting messed up as you would with any other work. I wouldn't fret about it today. See how it comes back first.

What @sharpsicle said is right. Dealers don't typically deal with windshields, just like most of them don't do their own body work.

I had a leaking rear glass in my JTR, and it was the same process for me. Actually, the new Mopar glass and gasket had the same problem- it's a poor design- fortunately the glass guy knew what to do, and resolved it in a couple of minutes while I sat there and watched him. The dealer would've just re-ordered the backordered rear window glass and gasket, then it would've been another service appointment in three months. Glad I was dealing with the glass guy.

In regards to the headliner, I don't see how it would be affected by this at all. Am I missing something? (I don't have a headliner, but thought the Mopar headliner was held on by Velcro, and is easily removed and reinstalled)

So update. Just got a call from dealership. His voice sounded defeated when I answered. I quote “Mr. ####, your Jeep gladiator is back at the dealership. There was a small problem at glass installer”. In my head I was thinking “I FU$&&@! KNEW IT” thinking they wrecked the Jeep. Turns out they were unpacking the new glass and they shattered it. I quickly asked if they took apart the Jeep yet and they said no. Is this a sign?! Ughhhhh. Now the wait begins for another glass window to ship out before getting it installed.

My rear window had the typical leak so common on the 2020's. My research revealed more horror stories than satisfied customers when it came to replacing the rear glass. The results seemed very inconsistent and I believe that the third party glass vendors experience varied. I opted to seal the window myself and is hasn't been an issue since. You mentioned something about micro-cracking? ... if the window was actually cracking then your going to have to trust that whichever vendor they choose is competent and can replace the glass without causing further damage.

the shattered glass out of the box is also a common happening for folks. Happened to me and a mess of others.

Both common issues, glass leaking in rear and them being shattered out of the box. Supply is up on most things now, they should have another one in 2 or 3 days, maybe overnight. I wouldn't stress about to much

That "third party" glass shop will be the one the dealer chose because it's the cheapest, not "the most qualified." And it also means the glass probably won't be installed according to the factory repair manual, but instead in the fastest most inexpensive way.

I would maintain that a shop that does glass replacements as their day-in day-out business is going to be better qualified to do such work, more so than a dealership shop that does none.

That’s the most negative light to put things into. Any glass shop able to accept sublet work will likely be the cheapest because of the speed at which they can do the work and the discount they likely offer the dealership’s service department for their glass work - not because their quality of work is subpar. I get that dealerships and their respective service departments have a reputation, but these mom and pop shops they sublet to take pride in their trade and are the back bones to many things stateside.

May I ask how you fixed it yourself?

Mind if I ask what you used to seal the back glass, mine been leaking since I got it a year ago, I just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. I live in the desert, so it doesn't rain much to begin with, but on the few times I've looked back there, its obvious that it's getting worse.
