Guess I shouldn’t have forced it (steering).

I realize you have to pay to play sometimes and I’m sure it’s awesome, but that’s too expensive for me.
Dude I hear you… it sucked. And it’s going to suck again. But it’s a game changer for turning big tires.

Happy to report no problems with the gearbox. The shop that installed the sector shaft brace forgot to use loctite on the sector shaft nut. It was finger tight. Removed it, loctite, torqued to 177. All fixed. Hooray. It couldn’t have been a better result.

It wouldn’t have been the end of the world if the gearbox was bad, but this was super easy. I’ll take ‘em when I can get ‘em.

If you would have left it go on for too long. You would have damaged the sector shaft splines and the pitman arm hole.

My sector shaft reinforcement plate was so far preventing that. Without it, I’d have killed it.

The way I looked at it originally wasn’t the right way to diagnose. Today I got on the creeper and pushed straight up on the drag link. The pitman arm moved on the shaft, but the shaft and gearbox were solid, as was the connection to the drag link. Now that it’s tight I can lift the front end with the pitman arm. As it should be. I was quite happy.

Which brace was installed?
I really don't need one but the Metalcloak might be nice insurance.

I have the Steersmarts brace. Couldn’t be happier. It’s got a plate with a bearing that goes around the specialized sector shaft nut, below the pitman. It works quite well. Really well since it save my gearbox this week.

Technically, that pitman nut should be replaced each time the pitman arm is removed.
If you look at the TSB for the steering box it gives the part number and it's one of the required part.
I guess barring a new nut - Loctite is the next best.
Years ago they were locknuts and the shaft was staked to prevent the nut from working loose.
