I have done this also with an older Honda Ridgeline ? before I bought the JTO. I also/now use a 6' hitch extension which really works well and have loaded it with a dozen 2x10's. Height is adjustable.

I mean, we all make dumb choices sometimes...

I'll own up to this one:

Not sure which is worse, but we all do it at some point. I always think back and go "Well, did you die?".

I unintentionally did this with some 12' 4x4's many years ago when the ratchet strap slipped going over a bump at about 50mph. The 4x4's went straight through the sliding glass on the long bed dbl taco I had at the time but stopped about 2' inside the cab. Insurance paid 100%

I should not have listened to my buddy who said "aw hell that'll ride fine like that"

Isnt that what that little window is for ? It sure isnt good for anything else, LOL
They make them smaller now, so the person in the back has a harder time reaching the cooler in the bed to pass you another bottle of “water”. ??

Tempered glass is stupid strong.................if struck straight on normal to the flat surface. It's achilles heal is striking it on the edges. It will blow apart when struck there with enough force.
It can also be blown to bits by an impact on the other side creating enough air pressure. Ask me how I know............
Get hit on the right side, windows on the left blown out in a million pieces. Glass everywhere.

You can really haul some very long stuff in these trucks.

Who me? I've hauled 16 footers up and over the windshield no problem. As far as the glass back window..... I cut a wood block that rides just over the window height so the wood never touches the glass.

I have a diamondback so legit rack is challenging.

I do this with my fishing poles quite often. If I'm running into Wally world to grab bait I'm not trying to leave them in the bed of the truck, so I'll throw them in and lay them from dash to window. So far I still have all my fishing poles lol
I trust this, it locks and I put the twisting reel seat in the lock so you "cant'" steal the reel

You don’t understand where I live lol. People will snap the pole in half just to see you not have it. At least if it’s hanging out the window it’s harder to grab ?‍♂

I have done this often, small light stuff. 16' items only in the bed sticking that far out . . .just waiting for a ticket or loss of said items.

Grabbing the wife's truck to tow the 12' dump trailer to pick up some trim molding or PVC pipe is just a hassle.

I'd go over the roof before I'd go through the cab. I know a guy who died when the load came loose in an accident he otherwise would have survived. Nothing comes through that back window. There are extenders that go in the receiver that handle that sort of thing perfectly. As seen in my photos, you can haul long stuff in the bed just fine (with a red flag) and I use 6 straps if 2 will do. Never lost anything yet.
Hooking to my 18' trailer is a 5 minute job if I need a whole lot of big long stuff - it's a lot easier and takes a lot LESS time that maneuvering something through a rear window, risking health and the interior of the truck in the process.
I can haul 14 to 16 foot stuff in the truck, but the trailer is sooo much easier! Easy to strap the stuff down, easy to load as it's low, and if I get home and it's too cold to mess with unloading, I drop the trailer and use the truck for something else.
I just won't risk myself or the windshield or rear window.
It goes in the bed like my prior pictures showed - legal with a flag, or on the trailer.
It takes less time to hook up a trailer and go than it does to mess with stuffing something through a rear window while avoiding damage, then strapping it in place.
