This surprised me. I figured they'd have a safety factor built into them. Guess not...…and if you think 10 or 12k lb cable or rope is “good enough”, get the 17k lb rope or cable in stead. Who needs one to snap 2k lbs less than it’s rated to be or advertises to be. Good grief
YouTube is no different than social media. If you search enough you will find good and bad reviews of everything. Personally I've had 2 HF winches. One on my 2009 JK (still working fine) and now one on my 2020 JT. The JK has the 12K steel cable and the JT has the 12K synthetic. Both are abused and still work fine. The JK had 10 years of NY salt and grime packed in it from winter driving yet still yanks it around. Our SxS has a Tractor Supply 5K with synthetic cable. What works for you may not be the best for someone else.
Winch plate makes big difference. Check out the hardcore Jeep guy's evaluation of the Apex 12000 - he was quite impressed using it like Jeep people really would. It was a good review as is usual for him..
My only complaint with this one is that the crappy plate he used initially probably contributed to the HF winch failure. I'd be curious to see how it would have done on a better plate.
I also wish he had included the Apex 12k, but it looks like he may do a part 2..
