Some on this forum had their aluminum steering box replaced because of what they read online. Indeed some had issues. Yet others simply had theirs replaced pre emptively . Others decided. no problem.. no fix.

What do you mean, you got death wobbles after the new box? Or just the more transfer of the bump to suspension? Maybe before you didn’t feel as much of the bump cuz the steering wheel shook left and right before and you weren’t able to feel the direct impact you feel now that the steering wheel stays more straight? If I’m making sense lol
Sorry for the delay reply.

bottom line: when I went steel, death wobbles started. But steering firmness and road wander was reduced.

so far I’ve tolerated the fox dampener upgrade and nothing else added - I wanted to keep a factory / dealer approved installed upgrade and lift scenario.

I’ve had a couple mostly minor wobbles over the past year since fox install. I adjusted the dial for more firm and it’s keeping it at bay or tolerable for now. And I avoid ugly bumps!

However - the right bump will still make it shudder more than a vehicle should - you can tell the front damper is working to recover - and so far doesn’t get into a complete death wobble but feels like it wouldn’t take much more to push it over the edge.

also- for 2020 models, I just got a snail mail postcard about a class action lawsuit to get in on by March that may pay back if we’ve had to pay out of pocket repairs to address front end death wobbles. Haven’t searched the site yet to see if it’s bein talked about yet…

That’s funny you say that, I just got my first death wobble ever, and I just got the steel box installed last month. I’ve only been driving it weekends so I’ll have to see how often it’s going to happen. I was planing to go camping next weekend and I especially don’t want a death wobble while towing my trailer.

86000 miles on my Rubicon and still on the original aluminum box. That is thousands of miles towing my 21' travel trailer, plenty of Moab trails and rock crawling, and backcountry Idaho trips. I did add the Synergy bracket early on, maybe that helps? Also, I am running stock size tires still.
I am up to 105k now and no changes, all is still well.

I'm at 32k now with the aluminum and it seems to be slowly getting more play in it. I'm having it switched out this weekend so hopefully it fixes that or at least doesn't make it worse. Otherwise no real issues but seems "looser" than it should be. All stock steering and suspension besides 1.5" spacer in the front and .75" in the rear.

I understand leaving well enough alone, but I will add my experience. I have a 2020 with 26k miles. I had the Synergi sector shaft brace and track bar installed on mine at 2k and honestly thought the aluminum box was fine, but decided to go in for the TSB before my warranty was up. While I didn’t think I really had a problem, the new steel box has improved the steering over the aluminum - it is now much firmer and tracks straight with little effort. The dealer followed the TSB and didn’t say anything about my mild 2” lift or 35” tires; they even reinstalled the Synergi brace.
