I tend to change it every 3-5K miles...

Part just for preventive maintenance, part is just for the fun of working on my vehicles...

My service people have told me I can go off the computer. I have 36,000 miles on my Gladiator and have had good results letting the computer monitor and tell me when to change the oil. I have also not gone below 20%, mainly because of scheduling purposes.

Note2: I have a stick shift, and I also rev. it up to 5300 rpm every other time I drive it or so. Not necessarily full throttle, but, in a lower gear. I read somewhere that this is good for engine lubrication on these motors.
There is a person on BITOG who claims to have been a Pentastar design engineer, screen name OIL_UDDER. Lots of good oil-related info here:

If my engine is at full operating temperature, it always sees one or two full throttle runs through at least the 1-2 shift (AT).

Only makes sense from a valve stem perspective but that's really it, IMO.
Even then, it doesn't need WOT, just get high enough RPM to jump to the higher oil volume and toss it around a bit. There's a lot of oil that drips right onto these parts.

These aren't splash lubrication, so winding it up tight isn't going to magically sling oil to the right places. But increasing the volume by getting up to 70psi with the increased RPM will lead to more "leakage" from the followers and cam journals.
Just in normal driving I see 4,000 to 4,500 RPM and that's going to toss a ton of oil around under those valve covers and the chains are going to sling it like a chainsaw with the bar oil feed set to max.

Quality oil and not abusing the oil life by changing it based on not only time and miles, but how the thing is used and the environment around it. (Phoenix dust storms - it's not limited to them - there's a case of more oil changes)

Resurrecting this old thread because I changed my oil today. I intended to change it at 33% life remaining. One thing lead to another and it got down to 25% and I KNEW I needed to change it....I didn't make it. Today it indicated 17%, yikes. I used Mobil One 0-20W and I've been using Wix filters since I owned my last truck, a 2014 2500 Denali.

Anyway, reading my records it turned out to be over 11,000 miles between changes. I'm very uncomfortable I let it go that long. The last 500+ miles this past weekend was on a round trip drive of over 5 hours each way in 24 hours

....if that is of any interest.

Last change I installed a Fujimoto valve and it made the drain SO fast and clean. There is a clear tube on the valve in this picture. I literally didn't get a drop of oil anywhere other than into the container.

From now on I am thinking I'd better change at 50%. I use to make the changes at 4 to 5,000 miles.

Why yikes? That oil really looks GOOD.
That computer tracks more than any of us can when determining life. Granted, that's high, but it's not a yikes for me.
Since most of our trips get things good and warm, almost no short trips where it's not very thoroughly warmed up, and no short runs, little stop and go, I'd not feel bad going well over 5,000 miles.

Seeing how low that valve is below the pan is going to give me a nightmare tonight. No way would I use one unless it was protected by a skid plate.

I do a lot of highway driving for work. I had a Wave change last February. I did a change in September, when it was below 10%, and put in Pennzoil Premium and a Mopar filter. It was down to 1% when I took it in this February for another Wave change. I check the oil regularly and it always looks good.

EDIT:
It was 8201 miles from last February to September, and 7984 miles from last September to this February.

I wouldn't worry. I let mine get down to 10% almost every time before I can get it changed which is between 9500 and 10000 miles. My guy at the dealership says the oil always looks good and it has always ran great for me. I got almost 71,000 miles on it and the dealership has done all my oil changes.

For reference I did the same thing in my 2010 Wrangler and we let the BMW X5 50I get to 10% before having it changed. Never had a issue and the same dealership had done all the service work on those 2 vehicles as well.

For all you naysayers about the oil change light. I deliver auto parts and we have Nissan little cars, Versa or something and the Frontier 2wd pick up and the small vans. I am now approx 13k past the oil change time. The current mileage is 99,700. Heck, It does not use oil. Still full from the last oil change. That is a little excess from when it is usually done. Which is usually 5-10k past the oil change time.
My point. We don't have any engine problems abusing the oil change intervals.
Just sayin.

Don’t be a willful neglecter and run forever over on the mileage without the blessing of an oil analysis lab isn’t flexing your muscles. It’s just being neglectful. Anyone can run thousands of miles over and it only impresses the same type of crowd. If we want to run forever without changing, let a lab say the oil is good.

Otherwise, change the first one early, maybe go half way on the next and then go what your book tells you.

Everything has margins of abuse it will take but a vehicle like you describe for work, it will get auctioned off the second it becomes troublesome and the lack of maintenance will be the next owners problem. Not a best practice for a single owner private use vehicle.

I agree. The post was aimed the 3 month 3 k crowd. That is a big waste of money.
