Should I sell my RTT?

As already suggeted, I would get a cheap hoist from harbor freight or northern tool to lift it off by yourself. That is what I use. It works to lift hard tops as well.

I’m torn.

On the one hand I really enjoy the experience of sleeping high up above the ground. I’ve gotten better sleep in my 23 Zero than have in any other tent I’ve ever used. Hell, I’ve slept better in it than in my own bed at home. But there are also some downsides I don’t like about it.

Chief among them is the weight and inconvenience of taking it off the rack and putting it back on when I want to use it. My son lives in Minnesota so I have to hunt down a couple buddies every time I need to do anything with it and that gets old.

Up to now I’ve gotten around it by just keeping it mounted but that got old as well. My Gladiator is also my DD. AND I wheel every single day and that’s a lot of weight to be lugging around 24/7.

Curious what you RTT guys do with yours? Do you mount it during camping season and just leave it on then take it back off when the season is over? Or do you mount it for a trip then take it back off again?

I’m thinking screw it, just sell it and go back to a ground tent but not sure I can be happy sleeping on the ground or in a cot again after the RTT experience. I keep going back and forth on it. Not sure what to do.

Thought about keeping it and using it just for special occasions but I don’t have the room to store it in my small garage either. It’s pretty much either keep it on 24/7 or get rid rid of it entirely.

We love our RTT, but for all of these reasons, have a small RTT trailer. That way we also maintain our campsite for multi day trips. And the Jeep is light and low for wheeling.

Man do I love this.

If I could, I'd have a small utility trailer that I can do the same drop-and-go setup that I have on the truck now. That way I get all the benefits of your setup, or I can remove the RTT at home and make the trailer usable for other everyday things.

Oh if only I had a place for that trailer...

We didn’t have a good spot for it for the longest time. It used to take up the majority of our tiny garage. Now I got a cheap cover and hid it next to our shed, tucked into a berm. Pain to get it back there, but worth it.

i agree totally ben their too expecislly in cold weather or wet weather trying to fold it up it sucks i went to a gazelle t4 hub tent, and bought an xxl teton cot and teton sleeping pad, and bought a recon 4 sleeping bag, its all comfy and verry warm in colder weather and can entirely set up in 3 or 4 min and tear down just as fast im not scared to sleep on the ground its all in your head, people feel safer up high like bears cant climb? i take my 9mm and my 200 lb burgular alarm / cane corso every where i go any way? so im ok with ground camping as before rtt? the last 45 yrs of ground camping is what works for me

I just rig up a chain hoist and lifting sling for my RTT and can do it by my lonesome. It is a 165# tent, so darn heavy, but if you work smarter than harder it's a jiffy.

We usually go for for two week trips and I take it off every time. For the cost I try to keep it indoors for longevity. I figure I'll get a decade or more out it this way.

With as fast and easy as these modern tents pop up these days, one of those with a nice cot/mattress and a heat source would be darn comfortable. For me though, the thing I still dont like about a ground tent is being closer to nocturnal critters. And I dont sleep well as it is. Being higher up doesn't save you from a 'bear' but it does reduce risk.

I go back and forth about this idea myself a lot. I like a ton the idea of a small trailer to take all that weight off of the Jeep, but then again a lot of places I go and explore end up needing a turn-around, and are often times the type of road that is barely turn-around-able in a Gladiator, much less so with a trailer... Thats the #1 thing keeping me from getting a Dinoot kit and kinda the reason for the Gladiator in the first place - more space. But if I could be ok with a small Dinoot 6' trailer, I honestly would consider parting ways with the Gladiator and going with a 4 door Wrangler - then it could be used along with my TJ as well..... Man tough decisions!!!!

I left my Tepui on, pretty much year-round. When I took it off, I noticed no difference in mpg. The only reason it needs to come off is for parking garages at hospitals.

We just upgraded to a hard-shell RTT. I would love to have a utility trailer/off-road adventure trailer to mount it on, but no plans for that right now.

I've always like the inTech Flyer trailers.

Full disclosure I'm currently selling my C6 Rev Tent in order to make way for upgrade to AT Overland Camper (in order to sleep 4).

However, it was threads like this last year that helped guide me away from my Roofnest pursuit (weight, cost, on/off by myself, pulley etc.).

We had a GREAT time using the Rev Tent. It takes 5 min instead of 30 seconds to set up but with 4" mattress and a weight of 25 lbs it's been a dream to breakdown and store between trips.
