Fellow JTD owners...

Do remember what your oil level was right before your first oils change ?

I'm at around 6k miles, getting ready to change my oil for the first time. ( still debating doing it myself or taking the Jeep Wave freebie)

I checked my oil and it appears to either be at the dipstick level or it's barely touching the bottom of the dipstick.

I'm not a master mechanic... but from my understanding is a new engine will use oil during the initial break in... first diesel... so I seek advice.

So is this normal, did you guys experience this. I did check for leaks, everything is bone dry. I've never experienced any issues and the vehicle has been driven relatively easily.

Lastly does any know FOR SURE what amount of oil is measured from the bottom to the top mark of the dipstick ?

TIA

You need to look at the flat area with the crosshatch marks to read the oil level. Looking at the sides of the tip as shown in your pictures is incorrect.

Mine was basically just touching the bottom of the dipstick on the first couple oil changes. Now I'm at 100,000km and it stays full and doesn't go down at all.

It's hard to said without knowing the level it started out with when new. I would just change it and recheck at around 3k and see.

I would avoid Jeep wave oil changes if you like your engine bay staying bone dry. I didn't for that same reason.

Yes, I know this, I was just trying to take a pic that showed the oil barely touching the bottom of the dipstick. I appreciate your feedback though. Thanks

Have you not checked the oil at all during the first 6k miles?

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but looks like you needed to add a quart quite some time ago.
I checked it initially several times to make sure it was propper from the factory and periodically from there, but admittedly not for a while now.

I would just do the oil change and then watch it for continued consumption. There's plenty of oil in the diesel engine. Running a quart low for a while isn't going to hurt it.

If you have some free Wave changes available, I would use them. Dealer can't blame you for engine issues if they are doing the oil changes.

If it's a worry (warranty), add a quart and drive it for a few days before getting the oil change done.

Thanks for the great advice mr.Bill. good to know its hasn't caused any issues... Im normal not this careless, but being a new vehicle and new to diesels in general lots of other shiny things were getting my attention.
Like @vtuhad mentioned, I've also heard of the horror stories of a dealer oil change... but I do like your logic, the can't blame me fot something they do and I am still under warranty. My thinking is... if I'm going to have to take it to them to fix the recall fot the HPFP issue, which terrifies me, an oil change should be the least of my worries.. ha ha

*edit: I will probably add a quart, just in case... don't need any potential hassles from the dealership warranty or not... lol I already feel bad enough for allowing it to happen, don't need to hear a green-horn or service manager making notes or rubbing it in.

I've read a lot of horror stories here, but never really had issues with my dealer. The biggest problem was them losing a screw for the air box, which they replaced with no hassle. I now keep a log sheet taped to the air box showing the date and mileage of changes.

We have two ecodiesel jeeps- both between 5-7k had a “break in” where they consumed about two quarts of oil in a thousand miles…. Ones at 25k the other is at 17k now…. Only consumed during this period and haven’t done it since.

dealer said most owners don’t check their oil- “because they are new” but that this is pretty common on the ecodiesel.

Refilled 1/2 quart after 3k and another 1/2 quart after 6k.

I am just asking myself if I should wait up to 10k with the oil change or (let) do it now.

What does the Oil Life Monitor show? When it gets around 15% is a good time to plan when to change it. The recommended maximum interval between changes is 10K or 12 months.
