Lycoming still recommends a mixture of STP and engine oil as assembly lube for their aircraft engines.

Of course, even modern aircraft engines are basically 1940s technology; big, slow turning air cooled engines with carburetors and magnetos. The engine in my plane produces only 125HP at 2600 rpm from 290 ci (4.75 liter)... but it'll do it all day long at WOT.

Now if you really want to get a discussion going on an aviation forum just mention Marvel Mystery Oil... ;)
You mean this stuff?
A boss I had years ago said it was a great air tool lube - we put a couple drops into the impact wrench air fitting now and then. I used it for that for years (among other things)
This is the original can I bought decades ago.

That's the stuff. But Marvel also makes a specific air tool oil; that may be what your boss was using. MMO is reported to help prevent sticking valves from lead deposits when engines designed for 73 or 80 octane fuel are run on the currently available 100 octane.

Best stuff ever. Marvel MIRACLE Oil. I'm not an aircraft mechanic, Banking paid better (at the time). But any A&P will tell you this stuff is awesome. My A&P License has sat it my jewelry box collecting dust for 30 years now, still one of my bigger regrets in life, even though banking has been good to me.

You have to get the right color smoke. You can't use white smoke if you let out black smoke.

I have a friend who is still a believer in STP. He made me cringe the other day, changed the oil in his 22 Lincoln with Mobil 1 and added a bottle of STP. He gets this from his brother who owned a independent VW shop in the 60s thought it worked well then.

I don't put crap in oil.
These have gone many years, hundreds of thousands of miles without additives.
In fact, scientific tests have shown that most additives actually oil's film strength and that's what keeps the moving parts apart. That film strength.
I also never hear any noise on startup on any of my Jeep engines- quiet as a church mouse on every startup with the stock recommended oil.
I've had a number of 3.6 engines over the years. Never any engine troubles. Never any clicking or tapping, and all have been quiet on startups.

I hear noise on every start up, but I crank the radio and don't hear her any more......

The 3.6 does not like thick oil. That stuff makes the oil thicker and will take longer to pump to the rockers on a cold start. Todays oils are not like the oils in the 60s.

I agree with you 100 % modern synthetic oil is a completely different product. I would never think of adding any additive to modern oil.
