The summary is the same in any case - that shop screwed up, someone there did for sure.
I had one of my techs do that today and my advisor aiming for that bigger cut after the fact. Told them we'd eat the cost, but inform the customer asap before I make the call; as there is no gain, gain it with the survey for minimal profit and aim for the next service visit. As it is a recurring customer w/multiple vehicles that drops money.... We could of lost a solid 7 years of busines due to our issues at hand but sadly though, it does happen, someone ruins the process and it goes haywire. It is the course of action or some form of offer to remedy the issue. It happens though

See my fiasco with our JLU Rubicon 4xe transmission (in the other vehicle area) if you want some fun. Sorry, it's long, that's a problem I deal with.
the sales guy I normally go through saw how unhappy I can be when I feel my intelligence is being insulted by some mechanic. I walked in (just 1 month ago) with the wet cardboard from under the Jeep and laid it on the table in front of him and said "Scott, we need to talk". i explained that it had been in twice before, this was the 3rd visit, and they were trying to tell me that wet cardboard, the fresh drops still easily visible on it, were residual from the leak back in August after 2 1/2 months. He grabbed the service manager, we chatted.................

OK I think we're still missing something here. Unless I read too fast. There has GOT to be a technician for Jeep in this forum that can go into the shop manual and determine if in fact front grille/components is required for removal for this warranty work.... Right? How is there NOT a Jeep technician on this forum with access to the warranty documents and a shop manual.

And still....if tires needed to be removed in order to lower the vehicle to work on, which I call BS because 99.99999999% of diesel trucks sit taller than a JT on 37's, then how can anyone even remotely justify over 400 bucks to remove tires. Sure, tires are heavy. Ok. But that does not justify that extra cost. Do people charge extra cost to remove tires on a diesel truck? If so I never hear of it. I can see the situation if the bumper does need to be removed since it is aftermarket and a winch yada yada. But, thus far unless I missed it nobody has been able to confirm if that is necessary, so it's all speculation at this point.

All that being said, I forgot myself to remove my aftermarket skid plate before a warranty repair on the transferase and did apologize for that because it was a bit of a pain for the tech. But they didn't charge me money. This whole story is unjustifiable thus far until we know for sure what is and is not involved for the repair.

@GladGreg did they also ask you to rate them a 10 out of 10 on everything like they did me despite having problems?
I can tell you for a fact that neither has to come off for this repair. I helped a buddy do this exact same job in his driveway, and we took nothing off the front of the jeep.

Agreed 100%

I believe the last time I asked the dealership to do a 5 tire rotation, they upcharged me $50. At the bare minimum, I would be arguing how that cost should be any different.

"Okay, instead of charging me $400 (or whatever portion was for the tires and not the winch/bumper), how about you do a 5 tire rotation for me and just delay putting the tires back on for a few hours."

Yes, you need the timing chain tool. It was bought on amazon. It was done in one long day. Nothing difficult, just a lot of wires to disconnect and parts to pull off. Make sure to do your plugs while you are in there.

Let me ask this .. I had a Ford with aluminim heads and although I took care and tried to lube them etc.. I had one out of 8 that the threads pulled on. Had to do a heli coil. Let me tell ya I was one nervous wreck fixing that sucker cause it was down in there 6-7" where I couldn't see it . Luckily it worked . But when the thread pulled it literally shot the sparkplug out ..lol. any way how much trouble was it to loosen the spark plugs ?

Need some help on this one. I'll go ahead and tag @JeepCares as well. Took my 2020 JTO (40k miles) in due to the classic lifter tick. Dealership diagnosed it as both camshafts damaged and also requires replacement of rockers and lifters for intake side. This repair is covered under the powertrain warranty, but they are trying to charge me $410 for the labor required to remove my "oversized tires" and "aftermarket bumper and winch." I had never heard of these extra charges and they seem like an unreasonable money grab, considering the majority of Jeeps have oversized tires and all kinds of modifications. Hell, you can buy it from the dealer with these modifications.

The dealer is currently waiting for my response as to whether or not to go ahead with the repair. I'm trying to figure out what I should do. Any help/insight is much appreciated.
Money grab and bitchy tech. I can see an extra $50 for having to deal with the winch wiring, I'd say better to pay a small extra and know they better do it back right since you paid for it, and not have them just throw the wiring off to the side since "they don't get paid for it." and it's not a tire rotation, don't even have to take the wheels off, no reason for that, they can use a latter

No issues with plugs on FCA stuff.

Plugs will not be an issue.

Try another dealership if you live in an area that has multiple in a reasonable distance. I've had this work done twice on mine with 37's and the stock winch bumper and they didn't have to remove anything.

I'm mixed on this one. It's BS in some ways but the dealer is only going to be compensated based on the hours listed in the book.

UPDATE: Sorry, it’s taken me a week to share the rest of the story. Service advisor called and told me the cam/lifter/rocker repair was complete. He then went on to tell me that there is still a ticking sound, which they could not hear over the sound of the previous issue. They diagnosed this one as coming from the timing chain tensioners and guides, which will need to be replaced under warranty. Unfortunately, those parts apparently won’t come in until February. In the meantime, it’s drivable and I swear it ticks even louder now than before.

I plan on calling a few other dealerships again to ask for their timing on the parts.

QUESTION: has anyone else had cam/lifter/rocker issues AND timing chain issues simultaneously at 40k miles?

I’ll try and re-find the video I just watched on a 3.6 rebuild and it was at 40k with significant timing issues…. Will edit when I find it- but there is a video floating on YouTube over it.
