What Coils & Mods to go with Ohlins shocks?

Hi All

Wondering if many people have experience with Ohlins STX Shocks (2-3 inch lift versions) with the Gladiator. Ive just purchased the shocks (waiting impatiently...) and need to purchase supporting mods. Ie Coils, swaybar links, brackets/ Control arms etc.

Looking for approx 2.5inches of lift such as the AEV kit (sans shocks).

For those that have Ohlins shocks what setup are you running? Vehicle is currently stock except for AEV Salta XR wheels and Micket T 255/85/17 tyres

You got the 2 to 3 inch version of the Olhins. Any 2.5 lift will do. You can either buy a kit without the shocks or Frankenstein a kit together like I did.

My AEV Mojave specific spacer kit didn't come with shocks, but shock relocation brackets so I kept the Fox shocks that came from the factory.

If you're going to run top of the line shocks, run a suspension that's up to par. I like the rock krawler kits that eliminate the rear track bar as it really smooths out the ride.

seriously considering that kit to pair with a hemi swap. I shiver to think about the performance.

edit come to think of it. That price is bonkers good if you just run extension brackets on Mojave shocks that are revalved.

Depends on your plans. Are you going to be towing or carrying a heavy load? Are you desert bombing at high speeds? Rock crawling? Mall crawling? Personally I’d look for the softest springs I could find and let the shocks determine the ride harshness or plushness. Great choice in shocks by the way. Wish I could justify the cost.

I wouldn't pair Rancho suspension with shocks that expensive. Does Rancho even make an adjustable control arm? Can you trust their control arm bushings? Do they know Jeeps well enough, or are they just trying to make lifts for everything?

My choices in no particular order would be:

Evo
Rock Krawler
Clayton

I know Eddie. Well, I know who he is, I don't know him personally.

Doesn't change my opinion on Rancho suspension.

I'd run Rancho shocks though.

And, Rancho, like Rock Krawler, has adjustable upper control arms.

Sadly, unlike RK, they only supply control arms for the front.

The idea that the springs are "matched" to the shocks just because they come in a kit is just foolish. Most quality manufacturers offer their kits with several different shocks or no shocks at all for a reason. Short of cheap, super high rate, dump truck like springs they all ride pretty similar with the same shocks in my experience. These ohlins are double adjustable and will be able to be adjusted to ride well with any quality springs. I'd be perfectly confident pairing them with clayton, rock krawler, Evo, or metalcloak kits and only lean toward rock krawler for the triangulated rear 4 link benefits. That portion is available separately if you want to save a bit going with a lower priced kit. I run the AEV 2" spacer kit on the mojave and just bought (not installed yet) the rock krawler rear triangulated upper kit. I'm going to bet that you'd be hard pressed to get any Jeep to ride and handle bumps at speed as well for under $1200 all in?

It's more of an Overland build
So yes will get a reasonably high load. Priority will be on comfort and stability at speed for Australian touring. Not so much on technical rick crawling.

Seems hard to determine how stiff or compliant springs are.

Well, the Rancho kit works well with Ohlins......

Rancho is pretty rare in Australia, also we are heavily restricted by local laws on modifications. We are maxed out at two inches of lift so that [Banned Site] Rancho kit will ensure plentiful interaction with the boys in blue.

Sad but true.

Ironically Tenneco owns Rancho and also owns the majority share in Ohlins FYI......... Maybe the Ohlins shocks were tuned on a truck riding on Rancho springs? Hmmmmm

Until we see a dyno sheet or actual testing is done, these thing are Russian Rulette except slightly less lethal.
