In preparation for the GDE tune, I decided to examine the EGR tube to see it's current condition, clean it, then compare it again post GDE tune at some point in the future.

The current condition definitely surprised me a bit. I can't imagine how bad it'll get at 100k miles if the engine does make it there. šŸ˜‚

Has anyone checked their EGR tube? Is this buildup normal for the mileage?

I will let you know … I put a stage 1 EOC tune at 16k miles… I been meaning to take a peak. I have 17777 now.

Like you, I plan to clean the tube then check again later. If it does somehow have build up, I’ll put some block off plates on it.

Looks normal if not on the cleaner side.

Share some details on how you cleaned it?
I soaked that end of the tube in a degreaser overnight and used rags and several nylon brushes the next day to clean off the carbon sludge buildup. I also had a can of brake cleaner to aid the cleaning while brushing.

Or even for us noobs, what is it? and what purpose does it serve?
EGR tube simply routes the exhaust gas back into the intake manifold to help control emissions. That in itself isn't the enemy. It's the oil vapor that recirculates back into the manifold and mixes with the EGR gas-this creates the carbon sludge that cakes up the EGR tube and inside of the intake manifold.

I'm definitely looking into a good catch can to help capture the oil vapor. I think a catch can along with the GDE tune should help keep things considerably cleaner.

EGR delete! Then you don't have much to worry about pcv oil mist. EGR is the bigger problem with diesels. I hope the tune works.

On my TDI engines, I could change the percentage of EGR operation. Going to 5% ( could not select 0) would be enough that when block off plates were installed, the CEL would not trigger.

I don't know how the tune or EGR delete works on the JT, but it needs to go.

Thank you
I don’t remember whose post it was, but if you contact them, save the email. They will get back to you shortly. If you use a fresh email, it will not responded to as quickly. I just got my kit the other day. I don’t like their drain valve. I ordered one I can put a hose on, for cleaner drainage. It should be here in a few days. Watch the video link in the previous post if you’re looking
