How much diesel to fill your truck from empty?

Not to hijack the tread but it’s kinda inline. Anyone got advise or trick to keep the foaming down while fueling? It stakes an extra 5-16 minutes sometimes to fully fuel up to the top lip.

Once it starts to foam. You have to wait. There is no getting around it. Once it clicks off the first time. Gently squeeze the handle to get the slowest flow that you can.

There is 3 different size of nozzles. The smallest diameter is the auto diesel nozzle. Then the auto gas nozzle. The biggest is the big rig nozzle. Like I said before. Some gas stations put the gas nozzle on the diesel pump. That won't fit unless you use the funnel, or remove the restrictor. There is a thread on how to do it.

When mine clicks off. I can put another 2.5 to 3 gallons in it, if I squeeze the pump handle lightly. But you have to watch out for the foaming. When it foams up. Wait a few seconds and start again until you see the fuel in the neck. Don't worry about the evap canister, because there isn't one.

It could be under the back seat drivers side. I want to say there’s a little net like pocket. Auto parts stores sell them.

It’s no where under the rear driver seat bottom with the hardware holder. It’s not behind the seatback either. I have a car seat installed on the passenger side so I can’t get a good look at what’s under there besides the floor jack. Behind that seatback is a portable speaker, but can’t remember if I saw a funnel or tool kit. They are probably just missing. It’ll get an appropriate funnel and keep with me for now. I’ve got a swing case mounted in the bed from the previous owner. Pretty useful.

My build sheet says 19 gallon fuel tank and I usually have to fill arround 16,5.

This is shortly before the fuel warning lights up.

Unless it's different in your neck of the woods, the auto diesel nozzle is the middle size, gasoline nozzle is the smallest size. The gasoline nozzle is too small to trigger the release for the filler tube restrictor.

I don't know why it took me so long to remove the restrictor, but now that I did it's so much better. No more fiddling with nasty adapters to put additives in , no more worrying about pump nozzle size. The only "issue" is stations that replace old diesel nozzles with the same color handle as their gasoline nozzles, so you have to be paying attention to that. And you REALLY need to make sure anyone borrowing your truck is aware.


Some advice, keep a box of latex gloves in your truck. Diesel doesn't evaporate like gasoline does, so pump handles get nasty and slimy if the attendants don't regularly clean them. Every now and then I come across a station that has gloves available at the pump, but thats seems to be pretty rare.


Also, NEVER run your tank too low. Any air that is introduced to the system can damage the already problematic CP4 fuel pump. 1/4 tank is the lowest I like to see. I'll admit I've had to run lower when travelling because of the lack of stations in some areas, but running lower than 1/4 tank should be avoided.

Gloves are a good tip. I used to work as a delivery driver and all our trucks were diesel. We had some GM pickups with Duramax engine and some box trucks with various engines. The commercial fueling station pumps at the card lock were usually covered in diesel. I would try to wear gloves when I could, for sure.

I may do the restrictor removal mod if I see it’s a common issue for me. I am familiar with diesel systems in the way that you do NOT wanna run them out of fuel. Air is bad.

All the tips from everyone in here have been great. Helpful for me even if I already knew some of it, and I’m sure it’ll help the next diesel owner who reads this thread.

Its a 19gal tank. Right at 30 miles of range left, or 1/8th os a tank. I fill up 16-ish gallons. The most of squeezed in was just a smidge over 18 gal.
