It’s about 50/50 from what I’ve seen. Living an hour from Los Angeles, I’ve seen my share. Most of it comes from the driver over correcting and that’s when the vehicle darts into oncoming traffic.
in a properly executed PIT (which this was) the driver has zero chance to correct anything

Only if it's an apple phone.

That's the kicker - there have to be Apple phones within range. Great for most areas, the cities and so on, but get out here where you don't have any reception most of the time, and there are few apple devices - and those that are here are way off the roadways, back in the trees.
I'm not saying they don't work or that it's not a good idea. If I was an Apple user, yeah, it's worth a shot and there's enough good stories out there to show it can work - recoveries thanks to air tag, but......... it's not a solution for all times or places.

I find it hilarious when people try to compare open roads, desert speeds and so on with crowded highways in other states. Do 90 here and it's a death wish. Hills, curves, holes, and the TRAFFIC and trucks have no shame about pulling over into your lane even if their rear bumper isn't fully clear of your vehicle, then, they ride up and down the hills of I80 shoulder-to-shoulder. Try to squeeze in, they literally play games here. I've seen a lot of people complain of the trucks in this area, and our highways and hills - not to mention "Iowa drivers". I even heard about "Iowa drivers" from a couple at the Jeep event from Ohio - they griped about drivers here cutting you off - and if you are going a great speed, someone will die here.
So are you arguing that PITing is safer for crowded public highways? If there's room to safely PIT at any speed I'd argue it's safe to drive that speed. Obviously if there's heavy traffic speeds need to come down. Hell you can't safely drive 20mph in stop and go traffic. Simple reckless driving laws eliminate the need for a speed limit on highways and freeways in my opinion. The idea of a 1 size fits all speed limit is illogical at face value. So it's safe for a big rig hauling triples that needs a mile to stop at that speed to drive 65, 75, 80mph depending on the sign next to the road, but in those same conditions a Ferrari is also only safe at the same speed? The Ferrari is more maneuverable, will handle better, and stop quicker at 150mph.

The death penalty would greatly reduce
car theft.
the death penalty for car theft also makes a car thief more likely to arm themselves prior to the steal and engage in in more dangerous behavior to prevent their own arrest. You want videos like this to include gunfire? raise the penalties and see what you get.

You see the same argument all the time for sexual crimes. "Make the penalty death and people will stop doing it". Nope. Make the penalty death and that leaves the assailant very little reason to leave their victim alive after they are done.

MythBusters showed how this all worked. They couldn't believe that if your vehicle was heavier another could force you off - yeah, it works and it's not something you will correct out of.

It's called LOBBIES........... no, it's not, but that's what the lawmakers got paid to say.

And no, they won't use the PIT when it's crowded, they wait for an opening. Geesh.
It's been done here and works fine.

Our police must be trained and certified, and they use it, and it works, even on our crowded highways - but they do wait for a safe moment.

And yet - caught red-handed with the goods, video witness of all of the crimes committed on the road. What due process? That's for "they might not be guilty" or "there were circumstances unknown, crime not proven - so go to trial".
Um well yeah, that’s how the constitution works. Go to trial, present the evidence and the judge or jury makes a decision. Is it perfect 100% of the time absolutely not but everyday there are stories of folks being found wrongly convicted after spending years in jail.

That needs to be corrected. I'd rather one or two bad guys walk than any innocent person be jailed.

I drove my gladiator out of a similar but maybe half the speed.
I was slowing down at a construction site, 2 lanes merged to one. I was doing 50 ish and an idiot hit me from behind going maybe 70-80?
Their mid size car crushed side of my rear bumper and bed.
The car penitrated into the back tire which is the stock 32" load range E.
When the car hit the tire it friggen launched and passed me unside down, skiding on the roof sparks streaming behind.
I was accelerated and siding sideway, truck totated may 20 degrees.
I stayed off the brakes, mildly and slowly turned into the direction of the skid.
Pulled over on shoulder, got out, checked to see if a code brown had taken place. Luckily it had not.
Called for a ride home.
Was scary.
Insurance wanted 17 k to fix.
I said cut me a check and we will conclude this.
I got a used bed had it painted, new tires and one wheel, high clearance bumper also.
No other issues with truck after through check.

These pit maneuvers need to be stopped! There’s absolutely no reason to actually chase most late model vehicles anyway because they all have location devices built in. But it’s nice to see while belted in ours, at the speeds I drive and under control at all times. If someone actually upsets my cart? We should fair very well! If mine were to get stolen, all I need to do is open my app to see exactly where it’s going. Not to mention with the help of the Apple Tag hidden inside, with fresh battery every 6 months or so.
That's fine. I'm supportive of the use of lethal force to stop running car thieves too.

In Charleston, they are not allowed to chase. All the thieves do is run now. That's not the way to go either.

That's the problem and one reason such crimes have increased - they know they can't be chased and PIT maneuvers are a no-no in some locations.
Even if caught, penalties are small. There's really little risk.

And it is the innocent taxpayers who suffer.

Thieves can find this and nullify your tag. Are you going to chase them? How will the cops stop your vehicle?
