Arkansas gonna be paying millions again in another pit maneuver lawsuit.
I was wondering the same. Additionally, was the troopers speed really called for considering:
A - This was an auto theft incident, unless I missed something. Not an armed suspect involved in bodily injury or shooting at random.
B - The amount of traffic relative to his speed and the use of the Center Lane left me astonished.
The Trooper had to have known the likelihood of this exact outcome from his maneuver at that speed. Does not inspire confidence in this officer's decision-making abilities.

It’s about 50/50 from what I’ve seen. Living an hour from Los Angeles, I’ve seen my share. Most of it comes from the driver over correcting and that’s when the vehicle darts into oncoming traffic.
Yeah, so many seem to be in L/A. It's a tough call. I've seen some new tech that is promising, such as shooting a GPS tracker onto the vehicle then meeting them wherever they wind up going.

ASP is no f'ing joke. I agree with the sentiments here that if you don't want to risk seeing the afterlife, don't steal peoples stuff. In 1996 I had a thief break into my house in TN and he was met with 2 .45 rounds center mass. I shed not one tear.

Severely contradicts your post right before that? How do you exonerate the guy you murdered for driving the truck his buddy lent him that he didn't even know was stolen?
I would rather the scumbag go free who killed my friend, than an innocent person be imprisoned for a crime they did not commit.

My friend felt the same way.

I didn't see any mention of a carjacking, and as I stated earlier I'm all for using force against violent felons. Fleeing isn't violent. And as the victim of a vehicle theft, I don't like to see the intentional destruction of the victims property. It's unnecessary and only further victimizes the person who's vehicle was stolen. Spike strips and all I need are tires. Maybe wheels if they drive on them for awhile. PITs at speed are guaranteed destruction of the victims property even if you have 0 value for human life because they stole something. In many of these PIT videos at speed they destroy the police vehicle in the process. In others they destroy multiple other vehicles. I've seen one where the PITed vehicle hits a Ford truck head on and kills the elderly drivers wife and severally injured the old man. All so they can pat each other on the back and say "we got him"? Property crimes don't carry a death sentence for a reason... because they shouldn't.
I disagree. Steal a working man's truck, and he can't get to his job, which means he can't put food on the table which means his children starve.

Screw that, you steal my stuff, I shoot you. If you survive ok, I'm not going to execute you, but we see shoplifters killing security guards and cops in their attempts to escape.

Guess what, property crimes are now potential death sentences because the criminals made them so.

At least most of the world doesn't share your low value for human life. Should we just shoot kids stealing candy bars to or is there some sort of scale? At what value is stuff worth more than the life of a human being? Now if you're in my home as a threat to me or my family then you made your choice, but if I see you walking down the street with my TV I'm not going to murder you for it.
I have a high value for human life. Criminals don't, so I know longer care about theirs.

Enforcing crimes with the appropriate level of force is pretty simple. Or do we just treat every jaywalker like an armed, violent felon?
Let us know when jaywalking is turned into a crime. It isn't, so your comparison fails.

Eh, lots of helicopters in the LA area, including the news helicopters. Even back in the 80s, LAPD would just back off once the helicopter was following. The thief would slow down and drive normally, and eventually get boxed in. News helicopters have helped the cops too.

The exception to backing off would be when the thief continues to drive recklessly. Then we get demolition time, things like an LASD Ford Explorer trying to stop an F350 dually.

Other parts of the country do not have, and do not need, helicopters like we do in So Cal. Most places have a highway going East-West and one going North-South. No ride beats Motorola. Call ahead, spike strip, maybe repeat a time or two. But there is much less drama, damage, and death.

I really do not want a technical solution, like a backdoor for the cops to shut down an ECM remotely, or tracking. If LEOs can do it, so can others.
