Who Wants to Compare Personal Property Taxes? [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

I live in IL, who I swear is working hard to be the worst state in the nation for pretty much all things tax related. We are #1 in a lot of tax metrics.

7% sales tax on vehicle purchases. My property taxes eclipse my mortgage payment by several hundred dollars each month. It’s so awesome.

I remember being down there and seeing where like a dozen people grouped together to rent a house near where they worked in tourist shops. Bed's everywhere but the bathroom.

Affordable housing is definitely a HUGE issue here in the Keys. Right down the street from me here in Key Largo, they built an 8 unit (I think) apartment thing with one bedroom each for "affordable housing." Problem was, when they opened, the apartments were about $3,000 per month. They had it figured you had to make between 70k-80k annually to qualify. Many in the service industries don't make that much a year. For others who qualified, once you made more than 85k or something then you made too much and no longer qualify.

They finally dropped it down to like $2000 per month but I bet 5 or 6 people will be living in some of the apartments when all is said and done.

Note: I'm having a tough time trying to figure how all this relates to Jeep Gladiators and keeping this on topic. About all I can come up with is that I drive past the place in my JTR on the way to the food store.

It's been more than a decade since I was down there. Across the alley from where we stayed there was a house for sale. One exterior wall removed, internally gutted to the point that the two story was just one big room from ground to rafters, so close to the houses on either side that you couldn't walk between them (and that needed paint), and advertised as "room for a small garden or to park a scooter. It was over $1M.

I guess property taxes relate because you can drive a Gladiator on property? (assuming you're not in the Keys with only room to park a scooter)

Yeah sure! Not! In any somewhat desirable place to live (anywhere)your local government will bend you over for more taxes than deserved! They know the housing market value will bring to them their max allowance yearly which is great for you if you plan to sell in a year or two and going for a yin or yang scenario. I personally pay more for taxes than any person in my area and yet request after request for property maintenance ( which is county responsibility) I’m given a phone call once on the first submission and told “your on the list” . After that I’m ghosted!
So ask ourselves what do taxes really do for the homeowners? It’s truly a big from your county. (At least in my area of FL) . Left me in a place where in the next year I’m gonna be renting a small excavator to do the job the county should have done two years ago.

The sad thing is that same 35% is what my friends and family in Europe pay, and they don't have to pay for health insurance, college, museums, etc. And they get more time off and better parental benefits. We are getting absolutely robbed blind here.

If we didn't spend such a huge amount of our annual federal budget on interest payments - on our debt, it might help. I didn't compare the US to other countries, but those other countries also have their own issues and aren't without their own problems.....

OTOH, countries like Korea, where there is free health care for all citizens, pay nothing, zip, nada, if you aren't a Korean citizen. So there's that.
My son, married to a full Korean national, couldn't get an emergency operation for gall bladder until he PAID first.
On the other hand, we turn no one down - doesn't matter, you can't be refused care.
