When my daughter turned 16. We had this argument. You want a car, you have to have a job first. Her, I have to have the car before I can get a job. This went back and forth for 2 weeks. I turned around and bought her a used Dodge Shadow for $2,500 . She got a job on the same day I gave it to her. She had one condition. She had to pay me $100 per month for insurance. I took that money and put it aside. She drove that car for 3 years and took care of it. If something was wrong. She would tell me right away and not drive it.

The money she was giving me. I used it and traded her car in to get her a nice Pontiac GranAm for graduation. She used that car for college. When she got out of college. I turned it over to her out right.

My first set of wheels was a new 1973 Honda CL 350 I bought myself in my freshman year of high school. I worked at a gas station all through high school. My first car was my mom's 1970 Plymouth 340 Duster which she had for2 years. She got a new 2 door Chrysler Imperial. Talk about a boat.

I said No reason being they steer and handle differently then alot of other vehicles. My youngest wanted a Jeep but I wouldn't buy her one so I bought her a BMW all wheel drive X3. It does very well for her.

I was a responsible adult at 18, and my sons were as well. At that age, you can join the military........ that's a very adult thing, or it will sure make an adult out of you!
So to me, it's not a matter of letting.
I bought my first car at 14, my second at 16, and I had a pickup and car both by 18.

Now - the poll says 16, the title says 18. So there is that.

I gave my son a bunch of options when he turned 16 on his first vehicle. He wanted more then anything in the world a old school S series truck. So I bought him a 2005 ZR2 blazer. Very good shape but it rode like a tank. Those S trucks were pretty basic back in the day.

But it taught him to drive a truck. Something you just can't set back and let the vehicle drive itself. No back up camera, no car play, no heated seats, no heated steering wheel, wondered down the road a bit, and very few creature comforts. You just had to learn to drive it with all its quirks.

When my daughter turned 16, she took over the ZR2 blazer as my son went into a pristine 2003 ZR5 crew cab with 45K miles on it. She learned to drive that "tank" and it made her a better driver because of its previously mentioned quirks.

When she turned 17, I sold the ZR2 blazer and found a fantastic deal on a neighbor that was selling a 2016 KL Cherokee. Heated seats, back up camera, heated steering wheel, etc. But she really didn't care for all upgraded options. They were just "ok" to her. But the deal was too good to turn down.

My son has since bought his first vehicle on his own (2016 Canyon All Terrain crew cab long bed)

My daughter is a jeep girl. She would love to trade in her Cherokee for a TJ, JK, JL., or JT. She enjoys driving my Gladiator and I have no problem letting her do so when she asks to drive it. She actually drove it to prom with a few of her friends.

My son could give a shit about Jeeps. He's a GM guy. And that's ok.

I was a square body GM guy growing up in the 70's and 80's and never thought I'd own a jeep ever. That all changed in 2010 when I bought my first Jeep JKUR. Now I probably won't buy anything but a Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator.

My first car was a 1968 Ford Bronco, my second was a 1978 Jeep CJ7 golden Eagle. Great starter vehicles. You learn control, using a manual transmission, and what tools you need to bring with you when you go out, and the struggle of side of the road repairs.
Oh, you meant a modern Wrangler. You will be fine, keep it under 60.

I rode my bike to my first jobs. In one case, that was miles away. But then I had jobs before I turned 16.
I recall Dad financing my brother's cars - it was all in legal contracts. They had to make regular car payments to him.
Mom and Dad could barely afford their own cars - let alone buy for us. When I got out of college, I treated myself to a new car. The banker didn't bat an eye - I had maintained savings and checking accounts with them for years by that time. i had already built up a good credit rating by the time I was 20.

Retired. Finally !!
In 1975, at age 14, my Dad brought home a non-running 1954 M38A1 (military Jeep) 24 volt system, waterproof engine (NOT water resistant, waterPROOF). Still OD green with U.S. Army and stars all over it. The Real Deal, no civilian CJ..

He told me, "Get it running and inspected before you get your driving permit, it's yours.". Only thing was I had to pay for all the parts; no kick-in from him. No taking it to a shop, I had to do everything.

Challenge accepted. What kid wouldn't ?

I got it running, drove it around our house so much that we had a dirt ring around my house.

A few months before my 16th birthday, my Dad checked it out then asked, "Ready for inspection ?". I nervously said yes. It passed.

On my 16th birthday my Dad took me down to the DMV. Got my permit. When we got home he asked, "I assume you want to take your Jeep out for a drive on the street ?". Of course. He said, "your Jeep" .

We did. At the time, the best day of my life.

M38A1 on the right. CJ-3A that I bought for 250 bucks on the left. I was 17 and already expanding my Jeep collection....

Jeep Gladiator would you let your 18 year old have a Jeep The Willys

My son's first Jeep is a JLUR. Couldn't pass up the deal when I found it. He learned to drive in my lifted Gladiator, so a Wrangler wasn't any real change. He likes the fact that it's easier to park and it's what he wanted. They are both good solid vehicles. He even took his driving test in my Gladiator, instructor had to ask me how long he's been learning to drive the Gladiator. I said since he got his learner's permit. Now my 2012 JK would have been a different answer. Do I think they are safe, definitely. This comes from the facts that my niece got t-boned (crunched the passenger side body), one of my friends had a guy with an unlighted trailer merge into his lane in the dark and sent him into the median where he rolled it end over end, and another friend who got t-boned by a dump truck that blew a stop sign. Everyone walked away uninjured. They are pretty solid.

Yup. I bought the vehicles, they paid for gas and insurance. If they got a ticket or in an accident (that was their fault), they would have to figure out how to cover the costs.

My parents bought me my first vehicle as well. They were teachers and I had Co-op in HS so I had to have a car as I left at 1:30pm from school to get to my job.

We bought out own - my first at 14. But I rode my bike to work until I turned 16 and got my full license. We paid for it all - car, insurance, gas, all maintenance..............
