I can't wait for the weekend to post this, lol.

I did a test last night on a piece of aluminum with two holes in it. I put a piece of tape on one side, dripped some resin in it, then put a few fiberglass mats on the backside. This morning the tape came right off and look its basically perfectly smooth underneath. I read last night that there could be a 2-15% shrinkeage, so i think i have a plan to address that below.

So this is what i'm going to try.

Take the JEEP badge off, clean up the goo, then I'm going to cut a circle out of a few pieces of tape and set those over the holes then put solid tape over that.

Flip the tailgate down and put the resin in the hole with fiberglass backing, let cure. Then pull tape off and the few MILs of resin that fill the tape holes i'll carefully sand off then wetsand the holes to (hopefully) be flush with the paint.

I think if i'm careful I wont screw up the paint that the JEEP badge doesn't cover up, (but i haven't seen these holes yet in person). So if I decide to put the badges back on, nobody will know the difference, but for my vinyl wrapped back, there will be solid material in the hole for the vinyl to cling/adhere/whatever to.

No bondo needed I think. I think i'm going to do another test tonight with the "planters wart style circle tape cut out" and put a few strands of fiberglass in the hole as well.

I only have 1 shot at this on the truck and I have to have it done by Tuesday, because Gladys has an appointment to get some work done.

@steffen707 Not sure if you are aware of this, but the "holes" have a slight counter sink to them on the badge side of the tail gate. May want to take this into account during your filler application.

i didn't know this, but that shouldn't affect it. i'll just make sure the circular "planters wart" tape goes around the counter sink so that the WHOLE HOLE:)LOL:) will be covered in resin. Then when i sand it down, the tailgate should be smooth.

test #2 tonight, couple of extra strips of tape cut out to create a nice sandable area hopefully. Did 1 piece and 2 piece test.

definately need to make the circle bigger so that more resin adheres around the hole just in case.

results from this
i think with just using 1 piece of tape with a circle to create extra coverage to be sanded down is enough. 2 layers of tape definately created more resin below the mock "tailgate".

2 layers

1 layer with tape side-by-side

2 - none - 1 layer of extra resin from top to bottom.

I think fishing line would probably work better.
you got that right.
I recommend 25lb test line wrapped like one of those assassin strangler thingies. that with medium heat on medium speed from my wife's hair dryer, took all 4 off in like 5 minutes. use a sawing motion back and forth and slowly pull the line away from the paint. Super easy.

taking the adhesive stuff off with my fingers took way longer. also gave myself a kind of rug burn on my thumb, ouch.

Just an FYI, 3M makes an adhesive remover that can be used to clean up the remaining glue. It won’t damage the paint.

i used rain-x bug and tar remover and it came right off. i'm assuming that didn't hurt the paint. lol

Can't wait until someone makes the retro Jeep badge for the rear, love the look. Would also like the old school gladiator emblem, only a matter of time I'd imagine.
