I notice a definite, not subtle, rattle that I'd guess comes from the transmission or transmission housing or mount or something, if I do a sloppy shift. Same as on my previous JK. I have no issue with it. Based on the sound I'm pretty sure it's not a loose tolerance on the inside of the transmission, but rather something coming from the outside, maybe on a sloppy shift the housing can bump up against a cable or something.
Yeah because its inconsistent im not taking it to serious, i did have the recall repair done so im thinking its that heat shield rattling or something...thanks for the input!

I'm thinking you're right, a heat shield could be it. If I thought it was an issue I'd crawl under and poke around, but it hasn't risen to that level.

I had the clutch replacement done. A bad rattle after they gave it back to me, it varied with temp and the quality of my shifts.. Took it back, it was a loose exhaust hanger bolt. Easy enough to fix yourself if you don't want to take it in.

I'll crawl under and check it out. Thanks.

I really don’t understand the gearing in this thing. I thought the JK 6spd was acceptable, would’ve preferred that in the JT. 5th and 6th are way too tall. I get why 1st is so short I can accept that. The 2-3 drop is a bit wide. Haven’t had a manual vehicle where I had to down shift on the highway to maintain speed since my worn out carbureted 4cyl ā€˜84 Nissan pickup. The shifter itself feels like an improvement vs the JK though the massive knob is just strange feeling. Going to live with it but I can’t see regearing doing much considering 1st-2nd will be too short just to fix the crazy tall 5/6. Really needs a swap to the JK trans.

I have to downshift my JK too. 6th is rarely used but 5th has more pep than the JTs 5th. Doing 2 overdrive gears in the JT I think was a mistake. I like the updated shift pattern on the JT and I was very happy they included a reverse lockout but I do prefer the gear spacing on the JK as well.

Let's face it. The new manual is not as fun as the old one. The new one is shift by wire with oddly spaced gearing. There isn't enough room for the clutch and a dead peddle, so your left foot is always weirdly placed. I loved the JK transmission. This one is almost no fun at all.

I agree the JK manual felt much better, but with a year on my JT now, I've adapted and find it still fun to drive. I prefer a Jeep with an "okay" manual and a bed over one with a great manual and no bed.

It's a "meh-nual" transmission.

Opinions vary widely about the JT 6-speed. Here is mine.

The 6-speed: it is not close-ratio, it is to my mind a typical 4-speed, designed with the 4 ratios appropriately spaced for typical everyday driving, and two overdrives for better fuel economy and less engine wear at highway speeds. What could be more general-purpose than that arrangement? You might nit-pik about the individual ratios, but IMO it is a balanced design.

Now if you need performance at a given point, you gun it and wind it out in the lower gears. Not a hot-rod, but it will definitely scoot if you do that. After all, when you do that you are getting 285 HP at the top. Not too shabby. Need fuel economy? Drive with a light foot and shift earlier rather than later. Your choice.

All of the above applies to 2H (and 4H, when appropriate). Shift into 4L, and it then becomes a close-ratio 6-speed. In that case, closer ratios might have been too close. It is a balanced design.

I agree with you.
I know my automatic Durango down shifts a few gears when I jump on it at highway speeds so I’m not annoyed with the lack of response at highway speeds without dropping down to 4th at times.
mans yes it has great power if you don’t mind using your rpm’s some.
love the manual.

I still plan on getting a 6MT when I order mine, but I would LOVE to see a 7 speed in these things.

1st - crawler, rarely used on street.
2nd - Used for most starts on the street.
3-5 - normally spaced
6 - 1:1
7th - a whopper of an OD for fuel economy.

That's my dream tranny.

Reverse is entirely too tall. Other than that I like it. It shifts so smooth.

I agree. I wish reverse was more like 1st gear.

There’s a thread over in the axles topic about regearing. I think I will be going that route, I recently moved to a hilly and mountainous area and the 3.73s aren’t cutting it with the stock tires, let alone if I want to go a little bigger.
There’s also other knobs about there, I went with speeddawg for something much more comfortable.
