They learn and adapt from what I understand and have experienced.
It is now part of the collective and has adapted to service the good of the many.

“Confusion”...”Hunting for correct gear”...
This is exactly why I absolutely detest automatic transmissions. And precisely why I choose manuals. Now... I’m just speaking for myself and not judging. It’s just that I REALLY don’t like them.

I get it - and if I didn't tow my cars around and have a wife with a restricted license (due to someone seeing her arm and saying she'd be unable), I'd have a manual in this truck. On the other hand, due to my wife's "non-conformaty", she's restricted legally to an automatic. Can she drive a stick? Well, she drove my Comanche with T5 al over creation, she drove my 1936 F20 tractor 20 miles to our new house - but if she's caught, it's a fine. So to make it easier for her, and for my towing - an automatic it is. I've always made everything so that if something happens to me, she's set.
I like shifting and oftan shift my 73 Javelin manually (besides, it's more fun to get a good pair of black marks on the highway when it hits 2nd and 3rd) High-stall converter in it now and may go for a manual valve body when I rebuild the transmission.
otherwise, I like manual transmissions. I get it - I get what YOU prefer.
YOU decide when to shift.

Took delivery of my Rubi back in December, and only at 2900 miles. No problems with 1-2, but 4th likes to linger a bit long going uphill or coasting downhill on the little local mountain roads. Usually put it in manual to remedy that for a bit.

Sometimes mine is smooth as could be, cant even feel it, other times its harsh....almost a "springy" shift. It goes away when I push it a little. I can feel it downshift if I brake hard. I'm waiting to see if it gets better/worse and I'm going to mention it when I go for service. It really doesn't bother me, I've driven a lot of questionable vehicles in the past, so I'm kinda used to weird stuff.

That may be it sensing that you need to slow fast - then it will force a downshift and remove the free-wheeling bit. .I have noticed that since day-one with mine. If I am going down hill and picking up speed, I hit the brakes a bit and it downshifts and it's like pushing the OD/Off button on my prior Grand Cherokee - it uses engine braking to slow me down and maintains that speed down the hill. I LOVE IT. All other vehicles I had to keep pressing the brakes to keep slowing when going down a hill My Chevy would keep gaining speed. not this thing.
I touch the brake firmly and let up, it downshifts and applies engine braking.
I think that's actually described somewhere = maybe in the book?
My WJ I hit the OD/Off button and the thing uses engine braking to slow me down on a down-hill.

The truck downshifts and revs the rpms when descending a hill in cruise control.

Mine does when not in cruise if I hit the brake pedal,
and unlike too many other vehicles, WHILE in cruise - it does as you describe and I like that. I've had others that picked up too much speed going down a hill in cruise.

That's a different animal than the "harsh" shifting and low speed transmission hunting here.

Sounds like that's engine surge. I've had vehicles do that, often when running too lean.

4.10 gears here. Shifts very smoothly imo. I'm not used to the "engine braking" when going down hills, but on flat land it shifts fine. Coming from a 2015 Silverado with the GM 6L80E transmission which could be clunky at times. It acted confused up until almost 20k.

Honestly, sounds like it shifts exactly like my '17 Ram 1500 w/ 3.92 and 8 speed. I like the way my Ram drives and shifts.

Thanks for all the comments here. I went to the dealer this AM, and they "Reset Shift Adaptives, and performed a Transmission Quick Learn procedure". I am ~40 minutes away from the dealer by highway and haven't driven much locally yet today, but in one short trip it did seem to shift smoother. Will update in the coming days. Thanks! I do have the Rubicon with the Tow Package as well in case anyone was wondering.

Hello- I have an automatic Sport with the Max tow & 4.10 gears. I don’t think mine is a shifting problem, but what caught my eye in this post is the original poster said 25mph ish zone is where it is struggling and that is roughly where I feel it is just a weird experience. Not searching for gears, but just hard to maintain that speed... you let off the gas and instead of “coasting” it kind of jerks your a little ...then you ever slightly put on the gas a little and it does the same thing... like jerks you around a little ... very hard to explain, but just “harder” to maintain a slow speed than any other car... if that makes any sense.

Hello All: I'm the proud owner of a 2020 Rubicon, and full disclosure I'm a Jeep newbie, have not had one previously. I was prepared for a less refined ride, and it takes some getting used to. Several days after I bought it we drove on a family vacation to Maine from NJ, so that is the break in period! I'm loving it, and happy with the purchase.

The only concern I have is in local driving, around 1500 RPM's, I'm finding the JT feels like it's confused about shifting. There is not a smooth shift into second, seems like it wants to shift back and forth between 2nd and 1st, or it's "confused" for lack of a better term. On a steady acceleration on highway there isn't an issue, but local 25 / 30 MPH driving I notice this. Not sure if it's a Jeep thing or something I should be concerned about. I do know a few others in my town with Jeeps (not Gladiators) and was going to ask them, but figured I would start here with the experts. My father in law is a lemon law attorney so I know I have a limited window to bring it back to the dealer if there is an issue, and frankly I REALLY am hoping there isn't. I have just under 1500 miles on it, bought it 3 weeks ago. Thanks in advance, I trolled this forum quite a bit before I made the purchase and it's been an awesome resource.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the JT tranny's learn and react to how you drive them? I felt that mine was a little odd when I first got it, but now that I've gotten some miles on it, it's really pretty smooth. I would get it back to the dealer, but could it possibly be that it's just learning?
