That's odd. I checked off almost every single option on the list when I ordered mine, and my payload is 1,511 lbs. Wonder what you got that I didn't?
So something I got is 26#, running boards?

By stripped out sport I assume you mean base sport? If so the base sport only has ~1200.

I was going to get a base sport until I found out I had to get the sport s, no tow package to get 1650
I thought the base sport manual trans was 1600lbs? The max tow auto is still ~1550lbs, it's just the added weight of the hitch and cooling equipment drops it 50lbs or so and the max tow isn't available on the sport.

Just went on Jeep's website - apparently max tow is available on the Sport now? That might be the hot ticket if you wanted absolute max payload and towing...

They must of intended to all along since the chart lists it as sport/sport s max tow.

After checking some vehicles at the dealership this weekend...This chart is half correct. :(

In fact the payload listed for Sport/Sport S with NO tow package is basically correct. 1200ish for Sport and 1600ish for Sport S. However, the GVWR listed should read "5800/6250" because a Sport with no tow package is 5800, and a Sport S with no tow package magically gets the 6250 gvwr. (This is all concerning the manual transmission ONLY)

Didn't Jeep come out and correct the max payload numbers to 1700 lbs?

I have started seeing the 1700lb number too...it's on their website under capability blah blah. If nothing else has changed, it means they have actually doubled down on the confusion because the only way to 1700lb that I know about is to have a Sport S manual with zero other options.

My Sport S with regular Tow Package has a listed GVW of 5800 lbs and payload of 1130 lbs with the options I have installed, so without options, it would have been around 1200 lbs.
Cheers

My LE says 1113 payload FYI. Not a concern for me.

It's simple - the payload rating is for that level, be it Overland, Sport, Rubicon, whatever, AS ADVERTISED. In other words, go tell the dealer I want a red Rubicon - and don't change anything else, and you will likely get that payload.
Order a stock, as built, with the things it COMES with, don't add options, and you'll get the advertised payload.
It's when you change anything at all - go from cloth to leather, from no remote start to remote start, no hard top to hard top, that you lose payload. Thus the sticker on the door saying what YOUR payload is based on the weight of YOUR specific vehicle. Mine went down about 69 pounds from ADVERTISED payload because I added the cold weather package, leather seats, the larger "radio", premium sound and so on- otherwise I would have had an Overland rated at 1100 exactly as advertised if I had bought one where the OPTIONS column on the window sticker was vacant.
So that's the advertised or MAX payload based on the BASE of that level - the BASE Sport, base Overland, or base Rubicon.
Put anything in the options column and they have to subtract that weight and print you a custom sticker for your door jamb.
Your last few words nailed it. It's not confusing really - it's this base vehicle CAN get UP TO this, "depending on how equipped".

I have 1544lbs in payload as it came from the factory. I think the hard top is what got it down from 1550. The heavier hitch and springs from the max tow is what makes it not hit 1700

And I sort of think that after explaining the different JT "trim levels" and how we ended up and such - why she suggested I look into trading up because I told her we lost a lot in towing capacity - and payload is particularly low compared to the others being more like a "truck" than ours. She sort of didn't realize - and said "well, you wanted a TRUCK, why didn't you go for the other? Multiple reasons - one being money but she says now that shouldn't have been the deciding factor (of course the dealer never even talked about or mentioned Rubicon like he didn't care to sell them and I hadn't learned all I know now about them.)
Yeah, she literally asked if I could trad up now for "3 or so" to get the towing and payload up a bit and have a more truck-like truck.
And I thought she'd be bothered by the money - obviously not. Especially if she mentions trading now after the fact. No wonder the mind-readers on TV generally don't choose women to try their talents on.

so that chart above states that my Sport S with Tow Package should have a GVWR of 5800lbs, but my window sticker says 6250lbs. I am assuming the window stick takes all my accessories into account...right?

How much do they assume per passenger. If you have a larger wife it could throw the numbers off as well... ;)

I had discussed it in the accessories/performance thread but will say it again here.

If you have a Rubicon with 1200lb payload. You have four 250lb folks in there (you and 3 buddies) that is 200lb left for your "stuff". Add a rubber horse mat to protect the bed (90lbs) and you barely have 100lbs left to put in before maxing out on payload.

Or if you have 1550lbs payload like I do, 90lbs for a rubber mat for the bed, 95lbs for the rock rails, 100lbs for the steel bumper, add the winch, add 1000lbs of people, that leaves me with just 265lbs of cargo payload. Less if I have stuff like tools/emergency roadside stuff. Puts things into perspective REAL quick. So I have a rule of thumb: 1000lb payload plus me. There was also some debate whether the max payload is actually 150lbs greater due to a 150lb driver allowance
