Hello,

Newbie here to the Jeep world,
Been reading and researching online and this forum and the crazy amount of information out there. ? I thought I wanted the diesel but that $6,000.00 upgrade seems a little steep and I will not be getting a manual transmission which I'm not sure I want to give up. How has it been going from a manual transmission to the 8HP75 auto transmission if you made the switch?
I going to go with 37' tires and it looks like the only trims that have the right gearing is the Rubicon or Mojave with the 4.10 gearing. That seem to work fine for most with out re-gearing. But I'm thinking the diesel with work better with the 37" tires or am I wrong?
With the Mojave not having the option for the diesel I'm at a decision of getting the Mojave V6 with manual transmission or the Rubicon with diesel and auto transmission. This is going to be my daily drive and hauling construction material in the bed every now and then.
I don't do much off-roading any more but typically my fist addition to my rides is a winch to get me out off most situations on the beach or mud.
Any advise or link to other threads that would be helpful will be appreciated.

Thanks

I can tell you this: The Mojave with the V6 and 6-speed is amazing. You would not be disappointed with the ride. The suspension package is top-shelf. Really fun to drive! Also, the Mojave is set up for up to 37s from the factory. (1 inch front lift over the Rubi)

Based on useage i'd go with the rubi and diesel. The diesel will let you handle the 37's with out a regear and since you want 37's you basically need a lift anyways which means you could get heavier duty springs for hauling/towing. You also will get the front locker and the swaybar disco and the heavier payload and tow ratings.

Everything i've read is that the manual with 37's is a dog even with 4.10's. Even with the auto and 4.10's 37's are pretty lethargic so you'll probably want to regear, and once you do that the difference in price between the diesel and regular drops to less than 2K.

I really like the diesel(despite its current bottoming out and other issues), and the automatic feels really nice...for an automatic. For me, even though it is a great automatic, I just hate driving automatics, so I went for a gasser.

As for gearing, I wouldn't get either of those just for the better gearing. Re-gears aren't THAT expensive. I got a Rubicon because I enjoy rock crawling and other off-roading, but if I didn't care about those things I would have went for a lower trim.

Opening this can of worms again huh? Know that much of it will be very personal in choice. I recommend you drive a manual, an auto gasser and a diesel before making your final choice.

There is no wrong or right answer but here is my perspective:

  • V6 gasser doesn't have the down low grunt - even with Rubicon 4.10's
  • In both gas and diesel, the automatic trans is just that much smoother
  • Adding 37s will kill your acceleration and fuel efficiency in the gasser
  • 37's with a manual trans will turn your 6-speed into a 3 speed with an overdrive unless you re-gear

I have 37s on my Rubicon and the diesel doesn't even know they there, it just goes and has averaged 22mpg highway. No regrets, but time will tell in terms of long term reliability.

I've driven both my diesel and a rental gasser. The gasser would kick down into 7th then 6th going up overpasses where I live. The diesel barely kicks down going from my elevation of 4100ft to over 7k. The gasser IMO is underpowered. Would not trade my diesel for anything. Absolutely love the torque.

Everything I read is positive on the ride, really smooth but the 37 on the gasser has me a little concern on the mpg.

The Rubicon and all other trims would need a lift with the 37 except Mojave correct? So now we are talking about another what 3k out of pocket. and if I don't go with a Rubicon then I'm going to need to add ARB lockers to the other trims.

If I can 22mpg with 37s I would be ecstatic!

If you plan on disconnecting the sway bar then the mojave and the rubi need a lift. If you dont then you can get away with leaving it connected. The mojave doesnt need a lift for 37's because it cant disconnect the sway bar stock. Even with that, the rear tire is going to stuff like crazy and be pretty sketchy on both because the rear is the same height for rubi/mojave. Here is my rubi pre-lift with 37's, as you can see that rear tire is rubbing and this isnt even very difficult.

Here is mine with a Mopar 2 inch lift, 37’s (same wheel and tire combo as @bleda2002) plus my mpg on the 700 mile trip from the dealer to my house.

35s and 4.1s on my Rubicon (so same gearing as the Mojave), and I love this combination with the manual. It's a fun truck on and off road. You have to get used to the long 3rd gear and short 1st. First mod I recommend is an idrive or another pedal controller. Throttle response on the manual was lacking out of the box. I have 12,100 miles on mine so far over 7 months, so as you can tell, I love driving this truck.

I'd have given the diesel a serious look if it came in manual (and was slightly cheaper), but I have never owned an automatic, so whenever I drive one, I feel uncomfortable, and usually end up slamming the brake or dead pedal thinking it's a clutch pedal, or grabbing the shifter and throwing it in park or reverse wrong when I'm in an automatic.

However, after off-roading with other Gladiators a couple of times, and from reading the feedback on the forums, I know the automatic 8 speed is great. The reviews are wonderful on that combo, so if it has any interest to you, drive both. The crazy low range on the manual rubicon, and easy clutch action means it's not taxing at all to drive the manual off road, though. It's downright fun.
