Drivers with Vanity plates don't seem to worry, so why do you?

I would get a vanity plate, but my libertarian principles keep me from giving the state anymore of my hard earned dollars than I already do.
Taxes are outrageous all across the board and I can't justify opening up my wallet any further.

$25 for the vanity plate (one time fee) Not sure how much plates cost to make or what it takes to put special plates into the system. I'm sure the county isn't actually getting 25 to use as they see fit. Still, I understand your feeling and the principal you speak of.
I sold the Javelin with the special plate - the county asked me if I wanted to keep one of the plates. our other vehicles have the standard boring plates they assign us.

We pay a one time fee based on the value of the vehicle, plus an annual $20 tag fee.
Each year thereafter is just the $20 tag fee.

So each additional year is the $35 annual special tag fee and $20 tag fee.

Holy cow - our one-time 25 bucks is nuttin compared to your having to pay every year for that "special tag" bit - but our crazy annual fee is killer.

Your $20 annual tag fee is less than our cheapest license fee for classic cars like mine. I still pay 25 bucks a year for a 40+ year old car.
We pay a "sales tax" when we buy - and the initial license fee on top of that, then we pay that annual 400-450 fee every year.
That's why I see our one time 25 vanity plate fee as a drop in the bucket.

In Oklahoma personalized plates are $25/year flat. Regular plates (which you must maintain in addition to the personalized plate) are on a sliding scale based on age of vehicle. From $95ish/year for a brand new vehicle down to $50/$60ish as it gets to a decade or so old. I don’t remember the exact numbers.

We don’t pay property tax on vehicle, but do pay a sales tax and excise tax on new and used vehicle purchases.

I inherited all of the plates from dad"s vehicles and some of mine, 1960-present. (One is a 1925 SC). Back then, plates were re-issued every year, no decals. Do not know why, but in the 60s, having a tag with a "C" followed by numbers was some sort of thing. Dad, being a Ford salesman, could call "his person" at the DMV and request a C tag. Many in the collection are that way. There were some years we had 3 or 4 new/different vehicles as dad sold his "demonstrator" . Wall art in the kitchen now.

There's a solution for looters.
Actually a couple of 'em. Well, maybe more than a couple..........
In my case, if my neighbor sees anyone on our property she doesn't recognize, she annoys them until they run away screaming for help. Even if we tell her someone is going to be here while we're gone, she comes over and gives them the prosecuting attorney bit.

In MA I have to pay extra for my veteran plate which seems pretty messed up, should be the other way around. I also have a couple 3 digit plates that I pay extra for.

Agreed - any vet should get vehicle registration fee knocked off for their primary vehicle.
You should at least get the special plate FREE if nothing else.
If that ever came up in Iowa, I'd be willing to pay a buck or two extra on mine to let vets have their veteran plate for free.
Maybe I'll contact my rep and see if they'll listen.

Same thing happens on gun forums except people blur the serial number. Not sure what I could do with a serial number to a gun I don't own.

In fact, it's the opposite.

Boats without registration numbers/numbers blacked out are questioned.

I suppose you could say you were held up and robbed and you saw the serial number of the gun the thief was holding?
Yeah, officer - that's him, and I saw the serial number, that's definitely the gun he used.
