Definitely worth it if you'll be on trails with others and there is no good cell reception in the area. Walkie talkie type radios will only work so far in a woodsy, mountainous area, so that's where a gmrs radio with a mounted antenna is very helpful. If you have cell reception in the places you're going, probably don't need it

I do hunting and will be doing circuit racing where I think a two way radio might be a benefit. However, I’m not sure if that’s really enough to justify it.

So, what reason should I tell my wife when a GMRS radio shows up Amazon?
Because the guys on the forum said you need one for safety and you will always be home on time for supper.

I bought this one. I hate remembering to charge things. It sits on the tunnel on the passenger side. Side arm is on tunnel driver side. We usually wheel in a group. As mentioned. Helps with spotting and just general trail chatter. "Heads up, 5 Motorcycles heading your way" Is useful to know in advance.

I like that this one has a weather band.

Times I was solo, like Imogene, I ran across a group for 20 plus vintage Toyotas. Guy on point told me they were scattered all over. I was able to jump on their channel and keep an eye on where people were at coming the opposite way.

To me, it's cheap insurance. It's a Jeep thing. You spend a lot of hard earned money on things you hope to never have to use. But you are damn glad to have them when you need them.

I have a Midland mounted in my Gladiator. I also bring two handheld with me; one for when I'm out of my vehicle, and another for wife to bs with a few of the other wives on a separate frequency.

Space wise it takes up nothing I have mine under the passenger seat and the mike is mounted next to the tune button on the radio.

I’m interested in getting a GMRS radio, but I’m not sure if I have a practical use for it. I don’t anticipate going on trails with my gladiator, except for some level B’s in the Midwest.

So, what reason should I tell my wife when a GMRS radio shows up from Amazon? Or alternatively, what do you use yours for?
I missed the part of what we use ours for... My group runs CBs with some Baofengs mixed in for the low entry point. I am adding GMRS Midland MXT275 to my Baofengs as my closer friends I wheel with are headed in that direction as well. FRS being in the same frequency set makes it easier for the entry folks to have communications without investing in the old school antenna and comms. I also use the radios as follows:
  • When backing in the camper
  • When pulling winch line
  • When we go the wrong way
  • When someone has a mechanical issue on the trail
  • Long haul comms, we annually travel to long haul locations as a group. It is nice to have simple radios for that
  • Let the kids play on it... Construction guys in town love that.

Chicks dig em.
But.. Jefe makes a valid point... get a handheld one and then buy some big lights. The wife will be very impressed with your sizeable lights. Most people never use those either.

Here are some pictures the last one is under the seat.

I just got a 275 myself for Christmas and I am looking for a good spot to bury it in the dash. My first spot above the glove box wouldn't allow it to close unfortunately...

Where did you put it? The mic cable isn't much longer than what I see in the picture, so it looks like the radio is right behind that kick panel?

The radio is under the passenger seat and I bought a extension for the mic which is tucked up under the panel from under the passenger seat

The extension is just a cat 5 wire extender

IMO, if you’re not going to be out on your own away from civilization a lot, buy a hand held set.
I purchased a midland hard wired radio for a couple jamboree’s that I went to. Never used it for anything other than listening to the lead Jeep give directions. My buddy came with two hand held radios that looked like playschool toy radios. They worked just as well.
I just purchased a couple midland T71VP3 hand held radios. I can take them with me in the Jeep or away on a hike, $79. I will be selling the original radio on eBay soon.

As mentioned in a couple post, if you are going with a jeep group than most are requiring GMRS. I got mine and decided to order the Molle roof platform system and will mount it there. I will post pics once the Molle comes in.

so if you take out your glove box, you will see a spot the left of your heater core and higher up that has plenty of room to put the mxt275 brain box. Heck I have both my gmrs and cb brains in there with plenty of room.

do you need a license to talk (only on the trail) mxt275?
i just want to talk to folks on the trail "yeah turn around, roads blocked" or "we are hanging a left" etc.
GMRS requires a license if you want to transmit anywhere. FRS is license free.
