Noticed after adding a winch that I've begun hopping again from the added weight up front making the rear lighter.

Mine hops bad in the snow while climbing up a slope.
Like driving on rumble strips.
Turning off traction control has no effect.

Floor the accelerator.
Then it starts hopping so hard it feels like the axle is going to separate from the vehicle.

Mine does this. Stock Mojave with 2500 miles with OEM Falken AT tires.

It hops with the diff open and with it closed. Only wit traction control off because otherwise it pulls power to reduce the spin.

It simply needs more damping though stiffer springing might help to limit amplitude. It will be interesting to see how the 3rd rear shock works.

I'm starting to wonder if a set of longer than normal Sumo springs might help.

What's those got to do with it? It's differential or axle twist that causes it, changing up and down isn't going to make a difference. You can have as much control over up and down as you want, it's the rotational act that's the problem.

Irealize that axle wrap or twist is the problem. The 3rd shock attaches at the top of the pumpkin. It is positioned to reduce axle twist.

Stiffer springing would be a bandaid to reduce how much it hops.

The thing is I'm not willing to give up the relatively plush ride I have now.

Traction bars would hang down too much. You would think that with the 5 link rear end it wouldn't need them.

Maybe stiffer bushings? Thoughts?

Mine hopped pretty readily in snow and sand with the factory Rubicon Fox shocks. At about 70k miles I replaced those with much stiffer Bilstein 5100s which improved the ride and handling, but it still had pretty ready axle hop I snow.
Today I got a chance to play around in some snow a bit and I did not get any axle hop. This was not really a definitive test, I would like to run around in snow for a few hours to try varied conditions; at first blush it seems that the kicker shock minimized (actually eliminated) axle hop. But, this was only maybe 30 minutes of playing around in some 12-18” snow.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

I'll buy the parts you bought if it proves to solve the problem.

Bad wheel hop on snow that was powder underneath a crust. Tire pressure was also too high at 37 psi.

What’s everyone running for tire pressure when you get wheel hop? I get it in sand and snow when aired up to 32psi(daily driving) but when I air down to 12psi for snow and sand I eliminate almost all of this. I have the AEV lift on a JTRD and even asked the tech team at AEV about this and tire pressure was their answer.

How can an axle twist that is located by upper and lower control arms and centered with a trackbar?

Any twist would be very minimal, right?
