Fuel Door Solution

My one complaint with my gladiator is the fuel door. I am not sure why they couldn't find a way to make the door open at least 90 degrees or even better at 110-120. With the door opening towards the driver's door and opening about 80 degrees, the latch scrapes my hand every time.

I have tried to find an aftermarket solution to replace the fuel door with one that opens wider or with a latching system that does not have a giant hook to positioned in the worst spot, however, I can not seem to find anything on these forums or google. The only solutions I have found are for locking caps.

Am I the only one that hates this fuel door? Does anyone have a solution other than just being annoyed by it all the time?

I've never noticed it before, but now that you've brought it up, I know I will.

Oh, bummer. It looks like it had the same mechanism as the 4xe.

I hope someone figures out how to retrofit the 4xe locking door some day.

Uh, no. All of our cars & minivans have been on the left.

Subarus are on the right, everything else I've had was on the left (except for my Vega, which was center behind the plate).

Most German cars put them on the right side. Subarus too. Probably many others. I think our fiesta st was on the right too,. But that's really a Euro car brought here.

My exact thought. I am VERY left-handed. It's a good thing with the tremors that have set into my right hand lately. Anyway in the pics it sure looks like the nozzle is turned, not going straight into the tank. If the nozzle is pointed straight down there's plenty of room for my left hand. I've never been scraped. The door fully opens.

I also always remove the cap and carefully let it dangle from the line, I don't set it on the door.

Filling my truck is one thing I've never had issue with save for one place I got fuel - their nozzles were weird and did kick back. But over 2 years and 24,000 miles and lots of fills, no complaints.

Showing my age here. Most of you guys would be hard pressed to find the gas cap locations on some cars built in the 50's. LOL Even if you knew the locations. Bet you couldn't open them.

Yup - and my other two cars are the same way. In fact several of my cars have had rear fill. (I sold that 70 a couple of years ago)

Rusty PW may be referring to the 56/57 Chevy with the fuel fill behind the tail light.

Cadillac also hid them behind taillights.
