I get 17.2 mpg on my 37s , wouldn't never run 40s on mine but I am considering 38s if I get some 17x9 wheels.

Did you swap your gears? If so, what did you go with?

Very cool! I live in the mountains so lots of ups and downs. I'm getting 14.7 right now.
It's not flat where I'm at either, right on the Piedmont, foothills line about a hour and a half from the Smokey Mountains of NC. Not all the way in the mountains but I was pretty surprised to be able to keep it above 17. Was at 18.7 on 35s

I'm also running a lighter 37, Kanati Trail hogs, only 72lbs a piece

I'd be in divorce court if I DID put 40" tires in my truck....... so it's outrageously expensive in money and emotional trauma and she'd probably take our little girl cat with her, there's another minus and a 40" tire won't fit up under the bed so I'd have to go back to just 4 matching wheels and tires, I'd have to buy a drop hitch to haul my trailer.
On the other hand, since I'd never see 6th, 7th or 8th gear again - there's a huge savings for transmission wear.
Yeah, I'm right there with ya. Plus the extra PITA factor when loading stuff, especially motorcycles into the bed. I don't imagine it makes for happier trailer towing. Definitely looks cool, I'll give you that.

I did a similar financial analysis on the benefits of a new rack for my wife, oddly enough using 40" as my preferred size.

Though the numbers made perfect sense, she declined my expert analysis and suggested I go and do something to myself that is physically impossible as. I lack both the flexibility and the necessary length to accomplish it.

I may be able to give your wife a second opinion if that would help.

Ok regardless of mpg 40" tires are more financially beneficial.

I did a little analysis on this, for that prior thread, and wanted to let every one know what I figured out from a real dollar and since analysis.

10000 miles per year, some basic numbers for fuel costs.

What we all have today on this forum:
Awesome 37-40" real man tires 10000/14mpg = 714 gallons @ $4/gal = $2856
Cool 33-35" tires 10000/16mpg = 625 gallons @ 4/gall = $2500

If gas prices go up we have to look at this:
Horrible small dainty factory tires 10000/21mpg = 476 gallons @5/gal = $2380

Small tires saves $556-$120 per year. That's great right?! I mean I would like $556 bucks!

But, we really have to look at this:

Cost of mount and rebalance, we have to put the small tires on, my shop it's free to put big tires on cause they are awesome, but they charge to put golf cart tires on; say $60-75?

Cost of loss sex appeal, lets face it chicks dig them big? What's the average cost of a divorce in the USA? Can ya blame her, would you stay married to you with small tires, ya I didn't think so.

Cost of ridicule at work when the boss looses confidence in you? That next promotion I'm sure is gona go to the guy with the Bronco now.

Cost of loosing interest in the out doors, lets face it stock tires can't even get to Starbucks.

Cost when you get fat and have health issues due to depression? We are here to help, you can still reach out. We can probably ask for a small tire section, think that would help folks cope?

In conclusion I think it's obvious you/we all should buy 40's, it makes since financially, for our emotional health and well they are awesome....

(even if totally impractical in 99% of our driving...)

seeing these more and more. Did yours balance well? How are road manners?
Well I havent had this size of tire on my vehicles for 10 years . But being back in the big tire game again I can tell you the improvements are excellent. With the 3.5" Terex lift they handle great in the corners , the diesel doesnt really know they are there , and the road noise is there but not annoyingly loud. As soon as I turn on the radio ( on low volume ) the noise isnt really noticeable.
