Is this transmission related to the ZF 8 speed in our JTs?

It's been great in the Chrysler products i've had it in, programming can fuck up a lot these days

It's their own. Looks like they are likely replacing it with the 10 speed GM co-developed with Ford.
The ones in question were developed and are made by GM - in Toledo.
From what I found, loosely based on some ZF designs but otherwise unrelated.
I've not seen any wide-spread talk of the MOPAR version of the ZF transmissions having issues.

I did not see the ZR2 listed but know that has been one with many problems. WRT our 8 speed my service guy said they don’t even have anybody at the dealer that specializes in it they have to out source it.

This reply on that blog post is gold:

I’m a firm believer that class action lawsuits need to be made illegal. 10 years ago I would have thought differently, but too often you get law firms with down time so they wrap up some clients all together with a promise of a quick buck and throw class act suits till one sticks. To me, that’s theft.
Yes these legal cases are just money generators for the legal firms.

They take a problem and claim to be for the consumer . They don’t expect to win they just want to settle then they take much of the settlement for their services.
These lawsuits really do jack for the end consumers. It's a windfall for the litigating firm when they get the settlement money while getting no admission of guilt from the other party. It's a money-making scheme these days. Maybe I don't think they should be illegal, but they sure aren't doing a whole lot of good anymore either.

I recently heard someone say something to the effect of, "We wouldn't need lawyers if it weren't for all the damn lawyers."

I work for a single product line dealership, a Lexus dealership.

We have replaced 5-6 GM transmissions in the last six months. NO BS. IDK if it was this specific model, but man its too many for Lexus dealer.

Lowest mileage was 40kish miles.

If you're asking 'why would a Lexus dealer do that work?' Some of it is guests purchase here and want work done here (most own Lexus vehicles too) and our local GM store is backed up 3 weeks (supposedly)

I know we own Jeeps and they have their issues, but these GM trans are garbage.

I get it - the local Chevy dealership has worked on tires from our Grand Cherokees, done work on my F250 I used to have, aligned my SX4, replaced tires on and aligned my 70 Javelin.
They do decent work and want me to come back.

In your case, I would assume that becaue Lexus is the luxury brand of Toyota, they'd do top-notch work and keep things clean. I can see people taking their "other vehicles" there.

I don't really trust GM non-truck automatics. My wife really, really, really liked the GMC Terrain all black with the elevation package and black badges. I asked her if she liked the murdered out look, so she started calling it her "murder car". There was like 7k in rebates on the thing at the time, and it was already about 2k cheaper than the Rav4 XSE before rebates. I would have loved to have saved 9k plus taxes, but I just didn't trust that overstressed little 4 banger hooked up to a brand new 9 speed GM transmission. Talked her into a white XSE rav4 hybrid instead. I know CVTs have their issues, but toyota seems to know how to build a hybrid. It's not like i was buying a nissan or ford CVT.

I got a notification of a class action settlement a few years ago with Remington. The total settlement was something like $10,000,000. The law firm got 1/3 plus "expenses" which brought it to over over 50% of the total judgement.

I think I would have gotten $28 if I had bothered with it.

That sucks for those Chevy folks - I took a glance at the Colorado before I went with what I really wanted in a JT. Dodged a bullet and didn’t realize it, but we’ll see how this Italian diesel fares out.

I think the 850RE is a pretty solid transmission, if assembled correctly. I cannot say the same for the 3.6L that came with my Jeep. Even assembled correctly it has glaring errors, my came misassembled so that was even more fun.

You didn't see the fine print? Some correct re-assembly required...........

What a dumb ass lawsuit. The issues were fixed from the factory 2018.5+ and the previous year models are all being fixed by GM or already have been. I’ll admit that the transmission in my 2017 canyon got bad before they fixed it, but it was fine after that. My dad has a 2018 Canyon (early 2018) and it was never as bad as mine, but it had to be fixed and it’s great now. I just drove it a few thousand miles and towed 6k lbs for 500 miles of it. It did great.

The problem was an outsourced hygroscopic fluid. Once the moisture content in the fluid got high enough they acted up.
