First I should introduce myself. My name is Mike, I'm in Santa Fe, N.M. I've been keeping up to date on the site since I bought my JTR in August.
I like to change the oil & filter in new vehicles frequently, especially during the first 2000 to 3000 miles. I read up on what to expect and realized how easy it is, so I'm going to do these myself. So I'm at 716 miles and I figured today would be a fine day to change the oil. I did some things around town and as soon as I got back I started the job. First, I pulled the dip stick out a couple of inches, took the oil fill cap off partially, then went underneath and then removed the drain bolt. Well, the oil shot out way past my storage tub and I had to quickly adjust it to catch the other 4 1/2 quarts : )

So my question is: Is this normal (being 0 - 20w) or should I open the drain bolt first and then open up the dip stick and oil fill channels?

Update:
I'm not completely caving on my original reply, but there is a consensus on removing the drain plug first. Another suggestion is to install a Fumoto drain valve with the longer nipple.

Original reply:
Completely remove the dipstick, fill cap, and oil filter first. This should resolve the water gun effect when you remove the drain plug.

Yes definitely a normal scenario being 0W20 and hot from a recent trip! You can certainly not pull the stick or open the fill but under the same conditions you’ll likely end up with a bigger mess with the oil burping out. Just expect it next time cuz that’s generally the best condition to perform the oil change.

I’ve got to go up to Denver next week to have the Mopar lift and 35”s installed so I’ll be changing it after that, I’ll try your method.

The last time I changed my own oil was back in the 10w-40 days and there really wasn’t any pressure, nothing close to that anyway.
I’ll be ready for it next time, thanks.

I've changed mine 5 times in progressive intervals since April. At operating temps I pull the filler cap off and pull the stick out a few inches and then the oil pan plug.

Invest in a better oil drain catch can. I have two of these and love them...

You are now past the learning curve and know how to adjust for it next time. Installing a oil drain valve can mitigate this.

Invest in a FUMO... I love mine. Revolves all the issues you mentioned.

I love the idea but seems like it wants to catch on something. I sound paranoid : )
Thats the only thing I could find as a negative... but there are lots of other things... some lower on a JT ??? Probably not the best idea for a 24/7 offroad but the weekender or daily ... I guess anything could happen... doubtful. They have been around for awhile... a few good knockoffs to, I've never heard of it happening.

It was one of my first thoughts as well.. They're not as big as they seem. Once you get them in hand, they're actually kind of small.

Just an idea... I hope you find what works for you.
