When I ordered my JTRD, the dealer was trying to upsell me on window tint, but didn't offer ceramic film so I declined and planned to just have it done locally.

Well my JT showed up and to my surprise came with decent factory tinted windows, like a 70% clear on the front windows (that's what the etching says) and a 50% tint on the back 3. It looks good and is a pretty good darkness and not sure I need to do more.

Did I luck out in the options I selected or do they all come like this?

Every one that I have seen has the rear window tint.

I had the front doors tinted to match with ceramic protection and had clear ceramic put on the rears after I took possession.

Rear door and back glass yes, front door and windshield no. It may be that your dealership has them all done and tries to hook everyone into paying full freight.

Being that you are from the land where the sun never sets, I would assume nearly every vehicle gets tinted as a matter of course, like a full tank of gas on delivery and the paper service mats still inside.

Mine had no tint. These are the only photos I have that show through before I tinted. Went with 5% in the rear doors and 20% on the rear window from a local shop for $160 if I remember right.

Window tint place I used said the manufacture tint is just for color shading and offers no sun (UV) damage protection.

I was charged $595 for tint at purchase. I will say though, it keeps the Texas sun out very well. I also don’t struggle at all to see out of the vehicle at night so I think whatever they used is actually pretty decent.

Per NHSTA:

NHTSA has the authority under 49 USC 30111 to issue Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSSs) applicable to all new motor vehicles at time of first sale to the consumer. Standard No. 205, Glazing materials (49 CFR Part 571.205) specifies performance requirements for glazing, and includes a requirement that all windows "requisite for driving visibility" (including all windows in passenger cars) have a light transmittance of at least 70 percent. The primary purpose of this requirement is to ensure adequate visibility through the windows, thereby reducing the risk of a motor vehicle crash. In establishing the 70 percent light transmittance requirement for motor vehicle glazing areas requisite for driving visibility, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determined that level met the need for motor vehicle safety.

Although Standard No. 205 itself does not apply after the first sale of the vehicle, 49 USC 30122(b) prohibits a vehicle manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or repair business from "mak[ing] inoperative any part of a device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in compliance with an applicable motor vehicle safety standard . . . ." The effect of Section 30122(b) is to impose limits on the tinting practices of motor vehicle manufacturers, distributors, dealers and repair businesses. These businesses may not install tinting on new or used vehicles that reduces the light transmittance of windows covered by Standard No. 205 to a level below the Federal requirement of 70 percent.

Note however, that NHTSA's regulations do not apply to certain parties or actions. Vehicle owners are not restricted by Federal law in the modifications that they make to their vehicles, and could tint their windows as dark as they like without violating Federal law (although NHTSA does not encourage tinting darker than Standard No. 205 allows). NHTSA recommends that vehicle owners not degrade the safety features of the glazing in their motor vehicles by tinting the glazing darker than Standard No. 205 allows. Federal law also does not regulate the operation or use of vehicles, which is under the jurisdiction of the individual States.

Under certain circumstances, State laws would be preempted by Federal law. 49 USC 30103(b)(1) states "[w]hen a motor vehicle safety standard is in effect . . . a State . . . may prescribe . . . a standard applicable to the same aspect of performance . . . only if the standard is identical to the [federal standard]." A State law would be preempted by the Federal law to the extent that it regulates the same aspect of performance in a different way, or permits something prohibited by the Federal regulations (such as modifications by vehicle manufacturers, distributors, dealers or repair businesses that would violate Standard No. 205). A State law would also be preempted if it purported to allow the manufacture and sale of glazing materials or new vehicles containing glazing material that did not meet the specifications of Standard No. 205.

State requirements applicable to the registration and inspection of motor vehicles after the first sale to a consumer are not preempted merely because they are not identical to the Federal safety standards, as long as the state requirements do not interfere with the achievement of the purposes of Federal law. Therefore, a State could permit the registration of a vehicle which had been altered by its owner by the addition of window tinting, even when the tinting reduces the light transmittance below the Federal standard.

Per 49 CFR$393.60:

§ 393.60 Glazing in specified openings.
(a) Glazing material. Glazing material used in windshields, windows, and doors on a motor vehicle manufactured on or after December 25, 1968, shall at a minimum meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 205 in effect on the date of manufacture of the motor vehicle. The glazing material shall be marked in accordance with FMVSS No. 205 (49 CFR 571.205, S6).

(b) Windshields required. Each bus, truck and truck-tractor shall be equipped with a windshield. Each windshield or portion of a multi-piece windshield shall be mounted using the full periphery of the glazing material.

(c) Windshield condition. With the exception of the conditions listed in paragraphs (c)(1), (c)(2), and (c)(3) of this section, each windshield shall be free of discoloration or damage in the area extending upward from the height of the top of the steering wheel (excluding a 51 mm (2 inch) border at the top of the windshield) and extending from a 25 mm (1 inch) border at each side of the windshield or windshield panel. Exceptions:

(1) Coloring or tinting which meets the requirements of paragraph (d) of this section;

(2) Any crack that is not intersected by any other cracks;

(3) Any damaged area which can be covered by a disc 19 mm ( 3/4 inch) in diameter if not closer than 76 mm (3 inches) to any other similarly damaged area.

(d) Coloring or tinting of windshields and windows. Coloring or tinting of windshields and the windows to the immediate right and left of the driver is allowed, provided the parallel luminous transmittance through the colored or tinted glazing is not less than 70 percent of the light at normal incidence in those portions of the windshield or windows which are marked as having a parallel luminous transmittance of not less than 70 percent. The transmittance restriction does not apply to other windows on the commercial motor vehicle.

(e) Prohibition on obstructions to the driver's field of view - (1) Devices mounted on the interior of the windshield.

(i) Antennas, and similar devices must not be mounted more than 152 mm (6 inches) below the upper edge of the windshield. These devices must be located outside the area swept by the windshield wipers, and outside the driver's sight lines to the road and highway signs and signals.

(ii) Paragraph (e)(1)(i) of this section does not apply to vehicle safety technologies, as defined in § 393.5, that are mounted on the interior of a windshield. Devices with vehicle safety technologies must be mounted outside the driver's sight lines to the road and to highway signs and signals, and:

(A) Not more than 100 mm (4 inches) below the upper edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers; or

(B) Not more than 175 mm (7 inches) above the lower edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers.

(2) Decals and stickers mounted on the windshield. Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspection decals, and stickers and/or decals required under Federal or State laws may be placed at the bottom or sides of the windshield provided such decals or stickers do not extend more than 115 mm (4 1/2 inches) from the bottom of the windshield and are located outside the area swept by the windshield wipers, and outside the driver's sight lines to the road and highway signs or signals.

[63 FR 1387, Jan. 9, 1998, as amended at 81 FR 65574, Sept. 23, 2016; 83 FR 22878, May 17, 2018]

In short, the most you will see on the front windows from MFG is 70%. The rear doors, top windows and rear windows carry more because, like all SUV they are considered to be commercial in that they may often be found being used in commercial service... it's a crock but a legal crock.

So looking at my build sheet the following were listed:

Tinted Windshield Glass
Front Door Tinted Glass
Deep Tint Sunscreen Windows

So either it's a baked in Rubicon option, color matched hardtop option or tied to some other option. I didn't get crazy with opts, just LED lights, prox key and remote start and none of that scream comes with extra tint.

I am not complaining just trying to understand how i ended up with a perk without even knowing.

The tint is definitely not dealer added thing, very factory right down to the etching, this was a custom order jeep that I gave the dealer no wiggle room on. Granted AZ is nothing but sun, I don't think OEM's factor that in when building cars for locations. I suspect it's tied to the Rubicon package and a perk included.

Looking at the order sheet for a sport model, code "GCD" is the code of ordering the deep tint factory windows for that model only. Not a option on any other model.

I did just find this in the April FCA order book

So factory tint is really just smoked glass. It's not an actual film tint applied to the windows. As a previous poster mentioned, it offers no UV protection and no heat rejection, it is for color shading only. On every vehicle I have ever purchased, I've had the windows tinted, even over the factory smoked glass. This way, you get the UV protection that keeps the interior of your vehicle from fading over time and the heat rejection that is badly needed here in southeast Texas.

I had the front windshield tinted 70% on my previous Gladiator and a rock chipped it literally the next day after I had it done which caused a crack large enough to warrant a windshield replacement. So basically, that was $250 down the drain. I'm not doing that again on this Gladiator.

See my thread on window tinting if you really want some detailed information about window tinting and what the differences are between kinds/shades of tint. They're not all created equal.

I wouldn't say I like tinting. It seems impractical and unaesthetic to me. In addition, I travel a lot, and in different states, the laws on tinting are different, so I prefer not to use such methods of protection from the sun. As an alternative to tinting, I use car sun shade since they are much easier to remove if necessary, and I have not had any problems in any state, except that it violated the law. But I believe everyone chooses what seems to him personally more convenient, so if you choose to tint, I think this is a good option for you.
