This thread was not meant to stir a discussion on towing because as I said in my original post, I don't have anything to tow at the moment. If I did buy something that I needed to tow, I am sure it would be well within specs and most likely well under 5,000 lbs (most likely jet skis or a lightweight boat).

Bought mine July last year... No problems what so ever.

My EcoD Rubicon overheated towing a 2-seat rzr on a lightweight single axle trailer up a modest hill. It’s been to the dealer 7 times since nov ‘20. transmission has been replaced, engine and tranny have both overheated, def level sensor went bad, and currently has a “service shifter” error on the dash which the dealer still can’t figure out. Stellantis is repurchasing it from me I surrender it in 3 weeks.

I loved the truck but really wish they had all the bugs worked out. I would like to buy another but hard to justify after my experience.…

Does anyone know if Jeep as made any improvements for the ‘23 model year? If so, which ones?

I’m in TX, but it does hit 110 here.
Zero issues day to day when not towing.

My JTRD has pretty much been trouble free.

I would absolutely get another diesel gladiator, even with diesel at $5/gallon

There is no way a production vehicle in 2022 will overheat under normal conditions. These trucks have been tested in all sorts of conditions. They'd never get homologated. I think this forum is really blowing things out of proportion. Overheating with normal driving, there is no way.
When I was towing in very MILD temps, 40s-60s, the oil temperature did increase above 225. Was about 235F or so and I was gunning it, 75mph almost everywhere plus a section of stop and go, gunning from lights. This was not overheating or anything. There is no way it will overheat in normal conditions. This is just straight BS now.
Going up the Interstate 17 grade in AZ in summer is not normal conditions

Have a JT Diesel and live in Phoenix. Love this truck so much and have never had any issues. I've towed light trailers, sat in traffic in the middle of the summer and have not had any problems. I also drive up the Beeline to Payson and then on to Showlow in the summers and have never had any problems with derating. Never had any issues w the ac or anything. I can confidently say it's been great! If I were in the market for a new one, I would definitely recommend the diesel, even with the current gas prices.

It derated once when new after i stopped to eat lunch, i suspect it was a heat soak issue. Now when filling up fuel in the summer after a highway run, I leave the truck idling to circulate coolant and keep heat soak at bay, i also let it idle for a while before i shut down for a quick stop after a highway run.

I also watch my temps and try to not keep the hammer down and in boost for long periods of time. Full boost will make temps grow quickly.

I love the truck and it works well for what I need, handles the i-17 just fine, but I am also not towing a big trailer just a open trailer and dirtbike.

My advise to you, if you are not patient, don't like to screw with stuff, monitor stuff, take matters into your own hands, or are not mechanically savvy or don't have a second back up car, DON'T GET A EcoD JT. The odds are it may have a issue and leave you hanging with no ride. You will get frustrated and loose patients and regret your choice. There are folks like that here who whine and cry and post how everything is so bad and demand results...bla bla bla.....

I use mine for long trips and rarely DD it, the EcoD is not really a daily driver (DD) car, it likes to streech it's legs and eat miles.
How do you monitor this? Just by sound? Particular RPM? Work load? A guy on the Wrangler forums was suggesting to keep RPM relatively high when climbing steep grades with a load. High RPM would circulate oil better, right?

I don’t have much of a problem with over heating up here. I plan on snow birding down in the Nevada and Arizona desert this fall and winter. So to avoid over heating problems I installed S & B air scoops on the hood. They were pretty easy to install.

A guy in another thread tested that, along with a few other ventilation strategies, and none of it seemed to mitigate temperatures. From that thread, he and others were speculating that oil temp is the primary problem. I keep reading these threads to see if anyone has investigated strategies to better cool the oil. I'll be towing a small trailer in CO and I'm already worried about it ?

What does your oil temp generally run at? On flat highway vs mountain passes. Just curious. I've never derated, but my oil temps are commonly in the mid to high 220s.

Well, I cancelled my gas order back in March and I currently have a 2022 Gobi JTRD on order and it is due to be delivered in late August / early September. I am so excited and am praying I don't have any reliability issues. I currently don't have anything to tow and I will keep my build minimalist when it comes to weight and looks (no rack or RTT for me - I like a clean minimalist look) so I don't anticipate having any issues.

I climbed the pass into truckee the other day and hit 247 on the climbs unloaded. Then it starts to go downhill and drops to 220ish.

It regularly sits around 239 oil temp degrees on hills in 85+ weather.

I just drove San Diego to Vegas and back on. Spent a few says in the area and did not experience any problems. I did not do any towing.
  • Daylight temps were over 105° it was 111° going up out of town.
  • No problems passing on any of the steep grades on the way in or out of town.
  • Hit 90+MPH passing up the grade headed out of town.
  • Engine temps were slightly higher tan normal but no issues.
  • 2022 Rubicon no mods accept tires.
  • Running 35's
