My Pixel has a feature called night sight and it takes a long exposure with image stabilization.

I have the 7 version.
I never thought of that, but it automatically takes about 3 seconds in the dark with a circular timer.

I wondered why the north sky just looked brighter than pitch black like the southern sky. I couldn't see many stars looking north but they were clear to the south.
So last night I decided to take pictures to show you here what I wasn't seeing and to sort of show a weird difference between the black sky and the northern sky.

This is what I got -

The sky looking south - black as expected:

And these are looking north -

So while I didn't get to view the neat colors, the whole thing, these explain the less than perfectly dark pitch black when looking north.

Pretty good views in northeast Ohio last night. The long exposure on the phone helps, but it was pretty visible to the naked eye.

I really wanted to but was already 56 hours past my bedtime and brain couldn't stay awake any longer.




What part of the state are you in? East of the divide? I was checking until 1130 and saw nothing.

Drove up from Missouri, to @ShadowsPapa ‘s backyard ( I think ) and snapped these just south of Waterloo IA. The wife’s phone could pick it up real good, better than our eyes too.
